Joint ventures to include projects with new, existing IP for worldwide users

Japanese game developer Square Enix Holdings and Chinese internet service provider conglomerate Tencent announced on Thursday that they have agreed to form a strategic partnership. Square Enix has entered a basic agreement with Tencent's holding company Tencent Holdings Limited.

The companies will establish joint ventures, jointly develop AAA titles based on new IP, and license existing IP to expand content services both in the Chinese market and globally.

Tencent vice president Steven Ma said, "We expect to be able to deliver many content experiences like never before to users around the world by combining Square Enix's excellent content creation ability and the wide internet service offering ability Tencent has."

Square Enix Holdings' representative director and president Yōsuke Matsuda said:

Tencent and Square Enix share a vision that seeks to offer new entertainment experiences for customers around the world through high-quality digital content and services that utilize technological strength and creativity. We strongly hope that the partnership with Tencent will be a powerful boost to the diversification of content that this company drives forward and to the expansion of sales channels.

The companies will reveal the details of their specific partnership projects in the future.
