Toei Animation, Sammy, Sola Entertainment, and Marza Animation Planet announced at a press event in Tokyo on Wednesday that they are collaborating with China's Bona Film Group for a CG-animated film tentatively titled The Monkey Prince. The family-oriented animated film will be a joint production between Japanese, Chinese, and American creators based on the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, which has inspired many manga and anime such as Dragon Ball.
The project with a global focus is aiming to utilize Japan's content power with China's technological strengths and market power. Sonic the Hedgehog game designer Naoto Oshima is providing the story and original character designs. The American CG-animated film Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius' director John A. Davis is directing the project. Shrek 2's J. David Stem and David N. Weiss are writing the script.
The new CG animation studio Tenh Animation Magic is producing the animation. Sola Digital Arts, Sammy and SANZIGEN's Galaxy Graphics, and Toei Animation jointly invested to establish the studio in October 2017.
