Live-Action Patalliro! Film Reveals June 28 Opening After Delay

Classic shōjo comedy delayed from planned fall 2018 opening

The official website for the live-action film of Mineo Maya's shōjo comedy manga Patalliro! revealed the film's June 28 opening date on Tuesday. The film was originally slated to open in fall 2018, but has since been delayed. The film's staff also revealed new stills for the film.

The main cast and staff from the "Patalliro! ★Stardust Keikaku★" stage play return for the film. The cast includes Ryō Katō as Patalliro, Tsunenori Aoki as Bancoran, and Hiroki Sana as Maraich. Kensaku Kobayashi is directing the play, and Tetsuhiro Ikeda wrote the script.

The first stage play ran in Tokyo in December 2016, and the second stage play ran from March-April 2018.

The original manga's story follows Patalliro, the crown prince of Malynera. The bodyguard Bancoran protects the prince from assassination amidst misadventures and mischief. One of the many bishōnen assassins, Maraich, falls in love with Bancoran.

Maya launched the manga in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine in 1978. The series later switched to Hakusensha's Bessatsu Hana to Yume magazine, Melody magazine, and Hana LaLa Online website. The manga has been serializing in Hakusensha's Manga Park app since 2017. The publisher released the 100th volume last November. The series claims to be Japan's longest-running gag manga.

The manga has inspired various spinoff manga, a television anime adaptation in 1982, and the Patalliro! Stardust Project anime film in 1983. The Patalliro Saiyuki! spinoff manga also inspired a television anime series in 2005.
