Toyo Keizai: Demon Slayer Franchise's Merchandising Is in 900 Billion Yen Range

Japanese business publication Toyo Keizai reported on Friday that merchandising, including food products and toys, for the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise is in the 900 billion yen (about US$7.9 billion) range.

Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga made about 10 billion yen (about US$87 million) in 2019 and about 44 billion yen (about US$385 million) in 2020 alone.

The novels based on the series have made about 2.8 billion yen (about US$25 million).

LiSA's theme song "Gurenge" for the Demon Slayer anime made about 300 million yen (about US$2.6 million) in 2019 and another 500 million yen (about US$4.4 million) in 2020.

Blu-ray Disc/DVD volumes of the television anime made about 800 million yen (about US$7 million) in 2019 when the first six volumes had shipped in Japan. In 2020, following five more Blu-ray Disc/DVD volumes, home video releases of the television anime reached about 500 million yen (about US$4.4 million).

The Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train anime film opened in October 2020. The film sold a total of 28,966,806 tickets for 40,016,942,050 yen (about US$367.6 million) in Japan as of May 23 — and became the first film ever to pass the 40 billion yen milestone. In 45 countries and territories worldwide, Mugen Train sold a total of 41.35 million tickets to earn the equivalent of 51.7 billion yen (about US$475 million) as of May 23. It had earned 40,096,913,600 yen (about US$366.53 million) in Japan as of June 6. The movie has since earned a total of about 51.5 billion yen (about US$450 million).

The Blu-ray Disc/DVD release of the movie has generated over 10 billion yen (about US$88 million) in revenue.

The anime film had sold 1,074,170 copies total of its Blu-ray Disc and DVD releases in Japan (including both the limited and regular editions) in only three days since it debuted on June 16. The first-week sales of the film's regular editions have surpassed those for the limited editions of Frozen 2, the previous record holder for highest first-week DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales in the animation category in the Reiwa era (from May 13, 2019). Gotouge launched the manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in February 2016. The manga ended in May 2020. Shueisha published the manga's 23rd and final compiled book volume in December 2020, which had an initial run of 3.95 million copies. Viz Media published the manga in English.

The manga had a cumulative total of 3 million copies in circulation at the end of November 2018 before the anime adaptation premiered.

• 100 million copies as of the 22nd volume in October 2020
• 120 million copies as of the 23rd volume in December 2020

The manga topped 150 million copies in circulation in February.

The television anime premiered in April 2019. The anime aired on 21 television stations in Japan and streamed on 14 services. Aniplex of America licensed the series and streamed the show on Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Funimation. Adult Swim's Toonami programming block premiered the television anime in October 2019.

Funimation and Crunchyroll are both streaming the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Arc and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc television anime. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Arc is a seven-episode arc that adapts the film, and it premiered on October 10. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc will then premiere on December 5.
