Full BFI Anime Season Announced for Late March, April and May

The BFI Southbank in London has now confirmed its full two-month anime season, starting at the end of March and running on through April and May. Tickets for the screenings up to the end of April are already available. Tickets for the screenings in May will become available to BFI members on Tuesday April 5, and will go on general sale on Thursday April 7.

Among the screenings is Masaaki Yuasa's latest film INU-OH (right) on Wednesday March 30, and Tetsuro Araki's new film Bubble on Wednesday April 20.

The other screenings include Liz and the Blue Bird, Memories, Tekkonkinkreet and Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa.

The screenings will also include Mamoru Oshii's films Patlabor: The Movie and Patlabor 2: The Movie (left); there is the option of buying a joint ticket to both films.

The season will additionally include screenings of several films at the nearby BFI IMAX cinema, including Millennium Actress, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, your name. and Weathering With You.

The BFI adds that it's hoping to confirm soon that some of the films in the season will go on BFI Player for audiences in the UK. The season was programmed by BFI Lead Programmer Justin Johnson with co-programming from writer and academic Hanako Miyata.

Monday March 28

8.35 p.m. Spirited Away (2001), directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Repeated on Friday April 29 at 6 p.m.

Tuesday March 29

6 p.m. Early Days of Anime Shorts Programme 1917 - 1946. This programme will include a TBC introduction and the following short films: The Dull Sword, The Story of Tobacco, The Lump, Nonsense Story Vol 1: The Monkey Island, Spring Song, Propagate, Arichan the Ant, La Surprise de Fuku-chan, The Spider's Thread, The Spider and the Tulip. The programme is repeated on Monday April 11 at 8.40 p.m.

8.40 p.m. When Marnie Was There (2014), directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi.

Wednesday March 30

6.15 p.m. INU-OH (2021), directed by Masaaki Yuasa.

9 p.m. Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors (1945), directed by Mitsuyo Seo. Repeated on Wednesday April 13 at 6.30 p.m.
