Makoto Shinkai's Suzume Opens in U.K. and Ireland Cinemas on Friday

posted on by Andrew Osmond

Makoto Shinkai's new film Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) will open in UK and Ireland cinemas on Friday April 14. It is released by Crunchyroll in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International, and Eurozoom.

The screenings will include some at the BFI IMAX cinema in London, near Waterloo station, both subtitled and dubbed. One subtitled screening, on Thursday April 20, will be presented by the hosts of the Ghibliotheque podcast, Micheal Leader and Jake Cunningham.

Suzume is described on the cinema's website:

"Director Makoto Shinkai (your name., Weathering With You) is back with another astonishing adventure. Suzume's journey begins in a quiet town when she encounters a young man looking for a door. Suzume finds a single weathered door, standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe took place. Drawn by its power, she reaches for the knob and a cataclysm of events follows. Now, Suzume must close the portals she has opened to prevent further destruction. Encounter this epic, wonderful world on Britain's largest screen."

Actress Nanoka Hara voices the heroine Suzume Iwato in the film. SixTONES idol group member Hokuto Matsumura (live-action Liar × Liar film's Tōru, live-action xxxHOLiC film's Shizuka Doumeki) made his voice acting debut in the film as Sōta Munakata, a young man who embarks on a journey with Suzume as the "Door-Closing Master."

Shinkai (your name., Weathering With You) directed the film and wrote the screenplay. He is also credited with the original story. Masayoshi Tanaka (your name., Weathering With You) designed the characters. Kenichi Tsuchiya (your name., Garden of Words) was the animation director. Takumi Tanji (Children Who Chase Lost Voices) was the art director. CoMix Wave Films and Story Inc. produced the movie. TOHO is distributing the film. RADWIMPS scored the film. Seattle-based Hollywood film composer, Kazuma Jinnouchi (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, RWBY: Ice Queendom) scored the film alongside RADWIMPS. TikTok performer Toaka performed one of the film's theme songs "Suzume."
