LOS ANGELES (December 6, 2018) - GKIDS' MIRAI, directed and written by Mamoru Hosoda, was nominated this morning for a Golden Globe for "Best Motion Picture - Animated" by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. To date, the feature film has also garnered two Annie Award® nominations including "Best Animated Feature - Independent," and earned a nomination from the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society (LAOFCS).

MIRAI made its world premiere at Cannes Directors' Fortnight, a rare honor for a Japanese animated film. The film is GKIDS' third Golden Globe nomination after last year's The Breadwinner and 2016's My Life as a Zucchini which both went on to receive Academy Award® nominations for "Best Animated Feature." MIRAI is currently playing in theaters nationwide.

"I'm just so surprised that my film's been nominated for the 76th Golden Globe Awards! It gives me great joy to think that my film could reach a wider audience, and more people could enjoy my little film. Thank you very much to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this honor," said writer/director Hosoda.

"Mamoru Hosoda is a great, humanist filmmaker -- more than an animator - he is a great filmmaker whose chosen medium is animation. He wrote and directed a beautiful, sensitive film from the heart, a deeply personal story about family, love, life, and the passage of time that brings laughter and tears in equal measure. I am grateful to the HFPA for nominating 'Mirai,' and so happy that Hosoda-san is getting this most deserved recognition," said Eric Beckman, GKIDS Founder and CEO.

About "MIRAI"
From acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars, Wolf Children) and Japan's Studio Chizu comes Mirai, a daringly original story of love passed down through generations. When four-year-old KUN meets his new baby sister, his world is turned upside down. Named Mirai (meaning "future"), the baby quickly wins the hearts of KUN's entire family. As his mother returns to work, and his father struggles to run the household, KUN becomes increasingly jealous of baby Mirai... until one day he storms off into the garden, where he encounters strange guests from the past and future - including his sister Mirai, as a teenager. Together, KUN and teenage Mirai go on a journey through time and space, uncovering their family's incredible story. But why did Mirai come from the future?

An official selection at Cannes Directors' Fortnight, and the epic capstone of director Mamoru Hosoda's career, Mirai is a sumptuous, magical, and emotionally soaring adventure about the ties that bring families together and make us who we are.
