Japan Habba to Return to In-Person Venue in Bangalore

BANGALORE, INDIA, May 4, 2023 | The 19th edition of the annual Indo-Japanese cultural convention, Japan Habba, is returning to its original in-person form. Organized by a committee of voluntary enthusiasts of Japanese culture and language, this event is the largest of its kind in the country, with official support and endorsement from the Consulate-General of Japan in Bengaluru, Japan Foundation, and the Japan External Trade Organization, and sponsorship from a wide range of Japanese companies including Sony, Rakuten, Fujitsu, Brother, and more. Japan Habba brings together over 6000 dedicated enthusiasts of Japanese traditional culture and pop culture — including anime, manga, video games, and contemporary music — all under a single roof.

Japan Habba will be held over two days, starting with the Tech & Jobs Fair on May 13 (Saturday). For students and professionals interested in pursuing a career with Japanese connections, this event features talks by eminent professionals from academia and industry, and a job fair catering to job seekers with an eye towards working in Japan.

The main cultural fest will take place on May 14 (Sunday). This year's edition dedicates an entire separate hall for pop culture events, including stalls selling anime merchandise and manga, a special Pokémon Go event, a Super Smash Bros Ultimate tournament, and informative talk sessions on anime and manga, among other events. Of particular interest is the latest edition of Animathon, India's largest anime and manga quiz, which has typically been attended by hundreds of participants. The karaoke contest is another highlight, with numerous participants electing to perform their favorite anison numbers. The cosplay showcase will see over 50 cosplayers take the stage, headlined by a dedicated Monster Hunter cosplay group.

Attendees also get to immerse themselves in aspects of traditional Japanese culture such as tea ceremony, calligraphy, ikebana, and origami, as well as sample a variety of traditional Japanese food. The main stage will feature cross-cultural performances by Japanese and Indian nationals, culminating in a performance from Tomokuni Terukina, a sanshin master of the Afuso-ryu school.

Tsutomu Nakane, Consul-General of Japan in Bengaluru, says, “Japan and India have historically maintained a close relationship, and Japan Habba provides a platform for Indians and Japanese to share culture and history. Indians can deepen their knowledge of Japan through a variety of cultural events and performances. We hope that many of you will come and enjoy Japan even more.”

The event is open to all, and will take place at the National Science Seminar Complex as well as the Satish Dhawan Auditorium, both located within the Indian Institute of Science. Tickets can be bought exclusively on BookMyShow.
