Anime Adaptation from Classic Dark Fantasy Manga: Bastard!! -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy- Hell's Requiem Arc Holds Pre Season 2 Panel at OTAKON

The legendary dark fantasy manga “BASTARD!! -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy-" serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump got its first-ever anime series adaptation, produced by Warner Bros. Japan. The first season was globally streamed on Netflix in 2022, and the highly anticipated season 2 will finally become available on Netflix starting July 31st. The pre-streaming Panel for season 2, “More Heavy Metal, More Dark Fantasy - It's the Bastard Talk Show! Panel” was held on the second day of OTAKON in Washington D.C. on July 29th. (EST)

At the panel, director Takaharu Ozaki, composer Yasuharu Takanashi and Producer Shinya Tsuruoka from Warner Bros. Japan were invited as the guests and appeared on the stage. Video messages from the main cast, including Kishō Taniyama as Dark Schneider, Kenshō Ono as Kall-Su was also screened during the talk show.

Panel opened with the second teaser trailer for season 2, and then the guests took the stage. The 3 guests were warmly welcomed by loud cheers from the attendees, and they greeted back by saying, “We are thrilled to be here at the perfect timing just before the streaming!”
First discussion was to about the overall work and the events of the season 1. When the MC asked the question How did you feel when you found out that you were participating in the BASTARD!! anime project?” Director Ozaki responded, “I've loved this manga for quite a long time, and I got really excited about the opportunity to adapt it into an anime series in this era. I thought we could go all out and create something amazing." Composer Takanashi followed, “I've been reading this manga from my boyhood and it had unique world setting since the start I was incredibly happy to have the opportunity to be the composer of this anime.”
Regarding their approach to directing and composing the music for the series, Director Ozaki commented “I wanted to depict as much as possible from the original work. And with the metal music, I tried to recreate the world view of the original work.” Composer Takanashi also mentioned, “ Sound director Ebina is in the same generation as me. Together, we've created the sound for the series with respects to the hard rock and heavy metal which were quite popular when BASTARD!! was serializing in Weekly Shonen Jump.” From their discussion, it was clear how important the music was in BASTARD!! -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy-.

Next discussion moved on to the characters and highlights from season 2. Ozaki commented, “A touch of post-apocalyptic science fiction essence is added to Season 2 to fantasy world view that was depicted in Season 1. Moreover the showdown between Dark Schneider and Kall-Su, as well as the revelation of their relationship, are also points of interest.” As for the character to be noticed in season 2, “Definitely Yngwie von Mattström. In this season, there will be some anime original scenes such as Yngwie encountering Kall-Su that is not in the original manga.” Ozaki said. Producer Tsuruoka followed, “Hell's Requiem Arc is the most popular series even in the original manga. As the story goes, bunch of new characters such as Samurai, Sorcerer shoguns join, with more magical battles happening… I hope you enjoy the expanding world of BASTARD!! Which becomes even more epic and magnificent. The most remarkable character for me is Tia Noto Yoko. Definitely keep an eye out for everything from her growth in battles, general character development and visual transformation from Season 1.”

A video message from the new cast members from season 2, Takuma Terashima (as Joshua Belaira) and Jun Fukuyama (as Macapine Toni Strauss) was shown after the discussion and they commented that “One of the highlight is many new characters such as Samurai and Sorcerer shoguns. But as always, Dark Schneider's arrogance and audacity is unmissable!”

Amidst discussing various highlights in the season 2, another trailer was screened and high-quality visuals and the intense battle scene between Dark Schneider and Kall-Su brought the audience's excitement to its peak.

At the end, it was reminded again that the streaming of the second season will start on Netflix from July 31, and “More Heavy Metal, More Dark Fantasy – It's the Bastard Talk Show! Panel” ended with huge applaud by the audience.
