Hiroshima Animation Season 2024 The 2nd Edition: August 14-18, 2024 Call for Entries: Competitions and H-AIR (Hiroshima Artist-in-Residence)

Following the first edition in 2022, Hiroshima Animation Season (hereinafter "the Festival"), the only Oscar-qualifying animation festival in Japan, now reveals the date of its second edition: August 14-18, 2024. For five days in the summer of 2024, a season of diverse animation experiences from across the world will be coming at JMS Aster Plaza in Hiroshima City.

Call for entries for the Competition and H-AIR (Hiroshima Artist-in-Residence) is now open!

The call for entries for the Competition, the main program of the Festival, now opens on Friday, December 1, 2023. The structure of the Competition has been renewed from the first edition and is presented into four categories: Short film, Feature film, Pan-Pacific and Asia Youth film and Japanese Commissioned Film, so as to make a selection reflecting the latest global trends and to showcase the outstanding films from around the world, as well as to discover emerging talent from the Pan-Pacific and Asia region including Japan. The entries will be accepted until Sunday, April 14, 2024. There is no submission fee until Sunday, March 17, 2024, so please apply at your earliest convenience.

"H-AIR (Hiroshima Artist-in-Residence)" will be held again followed by the first edition, as part of a program aimed at revitalizing the art and culture environment in the host city of Hiroshima through animation and the media arts and inviting leading animation artists and specialists from around the world to stay and work in Hiroshima. In the previous edition of H-AIR, we invited three artists: Nata Metlukh (USA/Ukraine), Mahboobeh Kalaee (Iran), and Sakura Koretsune (Japan). We will continue to invite the same number of artists for a three-month period. Call for the application starts, Friday, December 1, 2023, and lasts until Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

Outline of the Competition:
(1) Title: "Short Competition", "Feature Competition", "Pan-Pacific and
Asia Youth Competition", "Japanese Commissioned Film Competition"
(2) Submission Period: December 1, 2023, 10:00 (JST) - April 14, 2024, 23:59 (JST)
(3) Eligible Works: Animation works to be completed and released on or after April 1, 2022. (3) Submission Fee: Free until March 17, and 5,000 JPY from March 18 to April 14.

(3) Selection committee members: Nobuaki Doi, Koji Yamamura, Shizuka Miyazaki (4) Invitation Period: 92 days from June 1 to August 31, 2024

* Applications are open from overseas artists and specialists as well as those who are working in Japan.
* During the residency, the invitees will not only develop and produce their own projects but will also interact with Hiroshima citizens by participating in relevant events, cooperating in workshops, etc.
