I hope it's better than Fate / Stay Night. Is it? |

You can't really compare the two, unless you are talking about the Movie version of FSN, but no one considers the movie version of FSN a Type-Moon movie......... but in terms of animation, Garden is probably better, in terms of creativity and entertainment in storyline, I would say Garden is probably better too. |

So, I'm saving up in order to buy a PS3, mainly so that I can watch Blu-Ray movies (or have a workable Wi-Fi connection to a game system, thank you very much Mr. 360!). Now, I need another 400 just to buy this? So, all together, that's $700?
Interesting. I might prefer a DVD collection instead, but still, piqued. Speaking of Fate Stay/Night, I've been concerned with something. Isn't magi pronounced like "maji"? I mean, it just makes more sense to me. You don't pronounce magic with a soft g, you pronounce it hard. And when you say it magi, it feels like a reference to the three magi in the bible. "Maji" sounds like there's real power in the word. "Maguy" just sounds lazy, like they misspelled Macguyver and didn't bother to finish it. One little gripe about Fate. Sorry to change the subject. Lost? I don't think so. luffy brings up a valid point which ikillchicken is conveniently ignoring. As has been pointed out a million times before, but still seems to go over people's heads: this premium release is not blocking a more NA-centric priced release at this time. The ONLY thing that is happening is that Aniplex is offering this premium product at the same time its being released in Japan. Normally, absolutely nothing would be offered right now and any NA collector who wanted the set would have to import directly from Japan. Now, if two years from now, there still isn't a non-premium set available at a more affordable price THEN people can legitimately start whining about price blocking.
So yeah, anybody bitching about the fact that this premium product is being offered at a price they deem inappropriate is, de facto, expressing a sense of entitlement since reasonably priced versions of titles are NEVER offered in tandem with Japanese release dates. Why should Kara no Kyoukai be any different? |

Wow, I gotta say I'm surprised, Zac. I didn't expect a positive review after your comment on the podcast. I expected a fair review, but not one this positive. Then again, you had only seen movie four at that point, IIRC, and movie four is, like you said, kind of a rocky start for anyone not familiar with the story already, unless you're completely absorbed by that "what?" factor and intrigue.
I really liked the review. You pointed KnK's flaws without letting gripes about them fill up the review (my biggest gripe against the entire series is how infodump the majority of the dialog is). I love KnK, but I can understand why people would give up on it. And on that note, you did a good job explaining why, I think, KnK is so, uh... rabidly appreciated(?) by its fans--how everything that is the puzzle of KnK finally comes together is masterfully done. I think there's plenty of entertainment value and food for thought along the way, but, really, the payoff isn't apparent until the end of the story--though even then, the "payoff" is really only going to be such for those who have grown to see the cast as characters they can care about rather than the soulless, riddle-quoting containers they all were in the first (or fourth, whatever) movie. For all its visceral content and obtuse dialog, at heart KnK is really a story about Mikiya and Shiki (and their relationship) maturing, and in that it's a great success. KnK really is an all or nothing experience; if you quit before the end, you might as well have never started. Ah, one other thing, Zac. Like you said, there's so much to KnK that could be said, and a review isn't the place for all that, but there was no specific mention in the review of the themes that each movie had. What did you think about how the movies each kind of touched on different themes (loneliness, emotion towards another, pain, duality, etc.) and how they related to Shiki's character development? Or more in general, did you think the darker parts of the story overall were an effective at developing her character? P.S. Guys, there's already a thread for all this BS about the release over here. You claim it isn't, I claim it is. Neither are facts, both are theories.
I theorize that because this sold out in such a state, Aniplex doesn't need to do a proper release. Stupid people will buy it up anyway, as has been proven. I theorize in this case, that yes, it's preventing a more eco-friendly release. In this case, buying is hurting. It's a theory, and my only evidence is past business practices and current sales numbers. It's money-making 101: Don't fix what isn't broken. If it's broken, then make sure the public realizes or cares that it's broken. If neither, again, don't fix it. And holy crap, this is my 1111'th post on these forums. This is a special moment that we must all absorb now. ... Okay. Absorption complete. |

There was some humor in the series, albeit very little. It was mostly in the sixth movie revolving around Azaka and the silly goofy things she would occasionally do. Also in the fifth movie, during the montage sequence, Enjou Tomoe walks by the bathroom where the door is carelessly left open with Shiki reaching out her arm and picking up a bra, all the while Tomoe is blushing. That was a pretty humorous scene. |

@ John Casey: the FACT that this premium release is not blocking a cheaper release at THIS TIME is not a theory. Give me one example where a reasonably priced title came out in North America AT THE SAME TIME as its Japanese release. THAT'S NOT THE WAY IT WORKS. Let me repeat that for you. THAT'S NOT THE WAY IT WORKS.
What is theoretical is what impact this release might have down the road. Personally, I think it is highly unlikely that a premium release now means no cheaper alternative ever, however, I acknowledge I can't "prove" that. In any case, calling somebody "stupid" because they decide to support a legitimate release is simply being a colossal a-hole troll of the highest order. |

Ah. This makes a lot more sense that will probably be ignored with more bitching. The VERY fact that this is being released here at the same time as in Japan, in Blu-Ray, and All-flipping-together actually justifies the purchase of the title. At least maybe at Right Stuf International. Also explains the qualifier "PREMIUM" as opposed to, say, "WIDESCREEN" edition or "CLEARANCE" edition. Or "RIPPED FROM A BETA VHS" edition. Right now, there are early concerns of whether or not this is merely an early release in order to justify the price and content of the purchase, or if this is a long-standing all-we're-gonna-get version for years to come. Pre-gripe, basically. But frankly, there's no telling what direction this will go right now, since it's just out. Maybe there'll be a DVD collection, maybe there'll be a future dub (unbloodylikely), maybe they'll be released individually, who knows? You gotta give credit to Aniplex, though, for taking a risk with such a product. There will be naysayers on all sides, but for me, I applaud them for taking a chance with such a release, as pricey as it may seem. Here's to the future. To whatever happens. |
