don't tell me people have to pay for regular television over there.

Japan's BBC national TV station. NHK bill collectors go to your place like old door-to-door salesmen and charge an annual fee per TV. Laughing

that's $3 for the actual cigs, and 10 DOLLARS of TAX imposed upon it!!!!

NYC is progressively pro-health. Can't even smoke in any restaurant. That's why people I know quit! Laughing

how do they cope?

That's why you see kotatsu so much in anime. They can't go anywhere else in the house! Laughing

You think THAT is funny, you should try Germany Razz

The government comes on over every year and take a tour of your house, and charge you tax on basically EVERYTHING you own. Of course, they are on a schedule, so all people who want to avoid the taxes have to do is get their stuff out of their house for the government visit, so they take their stuff down to a family member's house or even put it out on the street in front of their own house. Yes, it doesn't count for taxes if it is out on the street! Of course this leads to people getting their stuff stolen, but the fact that they prefer that risk to the tax says something.

While I'm here I have something I been dying to ask:

Are the Japanese actually more respectful towards eachother than us westerners, or is that just a myth?

Is it possible to actually get some peace and quiet in an apartment building, as opposed to here in the US where EVERYONE insists on having expensive bass systems going full force even though they living a few feet away from 4 other families?

Also, it seems that the Japanese are as addicted to cell phones as us westerners, but does the same go for social networking?

TV Licence fees exist in numerous countries, mine included. I don't particularly approve of such things, though neither do I watch any television.

I remember reading somewhere that e-mails are still the rage, even with a populace that has incredibly wide usage and adoption of mobile tech.

*ugh*
the laws around the world are totally nuts.

who are these lawmakers that are audacious enough to conjure up these nonsensical laws that have no connection to simple common sense?
why do laws around the world seem to have an allergic reaction to logic and reason?

more importantly, why does everyone go along with these crazy laws, rules, and regulations that idiots conjure up....?giving these laws credence by doing so?

*sigh*
trying to make sense out of nonsense gives me headaches

Well, they gotta pay for that "free" health care, "free" higher education, and other "free" government programs somehow.

Question: Do you often see japanese women out and about with a camera man in tow filming some sort of public based pornographic video. There's way more of that stuff in japan than you ever get in the crappy US. I once saw a vid of two girls riding around the park on dildo bikes. Do many people in Japan own dildo bikes?

Why is it that the males always win those NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen events when it's the females who always dominate the Oricon charts haha just kidding I got nuttin oh wait I do have something, is it true that in Japan the students must stay in the same classroom with the same classmates all year and it's the teachers who have to rotate and switch rooms? That's like the total opposite of us here in the US haha

I actually went to a Japanese School for brief period and yes they do Make us Cleanup after school. I think it's good though, it instill discipline. Japanese schools are very clean you can't even wear sneakers around the premise you gotta switch your regular shoes with slippers in a locker before heading in to class. I Bullshit u not

It's fundamental for the government to tame its people, after all. If UK did that we wouldn't have as many rebels trying to cross the pedestrian crossing before I brake.

Yeah, I think I've seen that over 9000 times in anime.

But what happens if you refuse to clean up? I wouldn't rely on anime for that answer as most girls are cleaning freaks, and most boys are forced by the class president to clean.

What happens if you slap a Japanese school girl in the butt?

Is it true that if you have sex in a crowded train in Japan nobody will notice it?

Questions: What's up with fried onigiri? Is it just a fried onigiri or is it made differently like different kind of rice or special oil or other ingredients? Different fillings? (yes, this is a serious question)

Also, is their a wrong kind of filling for onigiri? You tend to see pickled foods or fish in them. Can you put anything in them? Like curry, roost beef, chicken, or even sweeter stuff like jam or a preserved fruit? I've let old pokemon dubs throw off my understanding of the fillings.

If I moved to Japan, how well would I be accepted as a foreigner?

Also, how hard is it to learn the language (I'm in my late 20s)?

Like anywhere else, it's all up to how good-looking you are. But don't worry, even if you don't have the looks, you can always enter a group of otaku ala Genshiken.

Depends on numerous things.
Your IQ level.
How much effort and time you'll spend.
Math wasn't your favorite subject.

I heard that just the spoken language should be easier, but I also heard that learning kanji and spoken language altogether is more practical.

I wonder. I went through that same phase of wanting to learn Japanese and even moving to Japan.
My goal was to have my own harem. (Blue-eyed blonde, green-eyed greenish, green-eyed blonde, green-eyed silverdash, green-eyed purpleton, white-skinned dark-black-haired and black eyes, same thing as the previous but green eyes instead, and that's the harem I wanted; they're all yandere, but they'd never harm each other. And of course their boobies are perfectly shaped.) But once I realized they all look alike I gave up.
What's your goal?

B - nah, it's just entertainment. You guys in the west take it way more seriously than 99% of Japanese people do. They don't consider it uniquely theirs, I don't think. Foreign cartoons are just referred to as American anime etc.

I KNEW IT! I had a feeling Americans took it more serious and it's nice to have some form of verification.

So this begs me to ask: What do Japanese fans think about some of the modifications our companies make to anime at times? For example, the dubs for Shin-chan and Ghost Stories aren't like the original Japanese versions. They're very different and contain swearing and are full of American pop culture references; they're gag dubs, essentially. Now, a lot of fans here lost there f*cking minds when they heard those dubs because they weren't like the originals at all. However, with you saying that we take it more serious than you guys, I am curious to hear what a Japanese anime fan thinks of this sort of thing. Are you (Japanese fans) offended by this stuff and take it personally like some American fans, or do you not care?

Another question that branches off the previous: There have recently been situations where a company has had to modify the ending credits for some of their shows because the Japanese licensor didn't provide them clean versions to work with. So, to work around not having clean versions, they improvised. In one situation they shrunk down the ending to a corner of the screen and had the credits scroll on a black screen (comparison shots). Again, fans here took it to heart and acted like Funimation (the company that did this) had slapped them in the face. So I ask again: Knowing that this was done, would this or does this bother a Japanese fan as much as it does an American fan?

I actually got some anime questions too now that I think about it.

You say foreigners seem to have a stronger interest/obsessiion with anime, but do the Japanese recognize creators and studios like a fan would or at least on a casual level? Do people love/know Hayao Miyazaki? Did they see the value and talent of Satoshi Kon? Do they love Akira Toriyama, mob Eiichiro Oda, or look forward to reading a Mitsuru Adachi on a train ride home? Do they show a interest in a particular studios work like Gainax, Ghibli, Madhouse, or Bones; similar to how regular people might for something from Disney, Pixar, or superhero movies like Marvel and DC? That kind of casual recognition. Or is it just another manga, anime, or movie to them?

You know, I kinda feel like I'm writing to Answerman now.
