Oh, I'd forgotten that detail from the movie. So that's what that ding ding ding! Pelvic thrusting in the bar was about. I guess I never really did figure out what was going on.

I for one really love seeing the gang again in all their crazy glory, though I will admit that the long beaks between new seasons/a movie do not help in staying connected to the world. Not only do you forget past events but it can also make you less enthused about the series in general.

So I'm still glad to have the gang back as of episode 3, but I will admit that, for me anyhow, Konosuba has lost a bit of its zing. I'm enjoying the new episodes, but they feel more like OVA than a new season. That said, the bar was pretty damn high since Konosuba season 1 is one of my favorite anime ever in the history of ever. I've definitely seen worse sequel seasons, and if this is as good as it gets, I'll gladly keep watching just for that comfort food type experience.

Kazuma remains a scum bag, and the first ten minutes of him acting like an obnoxious house pet that gets coddled anyway was both amusing and irritating for me. The episode picked up when his party arrived to take him back. It's interesting seeing the contrast between Lalatina the noble and Darkness the adventurer.

On the Train to the End of the World thread Spastic Minnow commented that having all the characters screaming is a comedy killer. And it certainly can be, especially when the voice actors are trying to substitute volume for investing real emotion. But there are always exceptions...D-Frag! being one example. And Konosuba has always had lots of characters melting down simultaneously in ways that were hilarious, and it was obvious that the voice actors were top notch and enjoying themselves and riffing off each others' performances.. But for me - and it might just be that I've been in a weird mood while watching the show or something because the characters have been consistent and the boxes have all been checked and everything - this show didn't really recapture the magic of the first two seasons until yesterday. But yesterday felt like something fell back into a groove for me. It's a hard quality to pin down. .

I've been saying the same since the beginning of the season and after a review, I believe the problem is that until Ep4 the comedy pattern was to have the characters "bounce off" one another exclusively, which is a departure from the previous pattern of "setup and payoff" which is good comedy practice. Further, in the past, the character interaction has been made part of the setup and payoff so it was present but not alone. That's why it seems there was something missing or "off". Here's hoping this return to form continues because I had dropped it at Ep2.

Season 3, Episode 4

So, someone is needing to clean up their senpai's messes up.

I hadn't been as into the season as I might have hoped, but I think I had some return. One I think Kazuma bouncing off Megumin, her being a menace again. I think that I liked a quick gag of Aqua getting sloshed with the maids, sharing her depravity. And the gang unloading on Kazuma when he is tied up because he tried to cover for Chris.

Also had to think that we have had an extended Darkness needing to be the responsible one. Which feels a little a bit of a shame as her masochism is one of my favourite gags. At least one good gag outside of that norm when she was taking no shit in allowing the perverts to peep, sure she likes being humiliated but I don't think she has ever allowed it to be done to others.
