This is about the date of the release, not a licensing announcement. The licensing was announced back in August 2014:

The licensing was literally announced at the same event as the licensing of the Strike Witches movie.

The series is dubbed, so there is a high chance the movie will be dubbed also.

And here I was just complaining about this being in localization hell again yesterday. It's so nice to finally get a window, even if it's still a pretty vague one. I suppose Funimation has to keep up appearances regarding their reputation following up Evangelion 3.33. I really liked this film as an epilogue to the series (plus, anything that has Kurisu as the main character is okay in my book), I look forward to finally being able to own it. Even if it did take them over three years to get around to it (at least Eva had the subtitle translation excuse).

I guess better late than never. 2 years ago I would have pre ordered and bought a fancy copy (if offered) of this movie, but it is not a high priority anymore. Sorry Funimation, this time around you will have to wait...for my money.

Are we sure the licensor is entirely to blame in this case? Lately Funimation has made a few screw ups with their releases.

Consider what is more popular - you'd think FUNi would prioritize getting Steins;Gate out the door faster than Strike Witches since they were announced at the same time. Kadokawa might have more to do with it than you think.

You said it yourself, that it'd be an instant preorder had they released it sooner (it's instant for me no matter how long it takes)

I have had the epic Import release for about 2 years now, so I'm not really in a hurry for this at all. I don't know, might not even buy it, to be honest. But I'm glad it's finally coming out for everyone else. I wonder if they would do a theatrical release for it now. I imagine the lengthy wait probably killed a ton of enthusiasm for it.

Funimation really dropped the ball on this one. Two years after the licensing announcement? Steins;Gate was at the height of it's popularity 1-2 years ago, so it should have been released then and not now for maximum profit. The majority of S;G fans have already seen it in some form or another.

I get it that these contracts take a long time to get done, but I really don't think the timing is good here.

Edit: It was two years after the announcement, not three.

Jesus Christ finally. It's like they forgot they even had it, saw the news for Steins;Gate 0 and said "oh yeah we have the licensing to the movie, huh?" Honestly, unless the set has some decent goodies in it, I'm probably gonna wait for it to get priced down substantially before getting it. I also hope they MAYBE add the IBM shorts. But I highly doubt it.

Did we ever get the new material shown during the rebroadcast localized? For NA, at the very least?
