If anything, this movie visually could be a treat. But I hope they can also preserve the more cerebral themes of the 1995 film. Even so, if this movie does just opt to be a cyberpunk action film (like some of the later incarnations also lean more towards) then it could still be fairly entertaining in its own right. If it isn't good, then whatever. It's not like this is gonna somehow destroy the first movie. You'll always still have it.

ScarJo is just always iffy because of her questionable acting ability.

Then again, maybe her sometimes robotic acting will be pretty fitting for a robot.

I am waffling between skeptical and cynical on this project.

May this be the last anime to live-action project. Ever. And may it be quickly forgotten to be never remembered again. Amen.

I'm hoping this will be a trilogy, one movie won't be enough.
Can't wait to see this movie when its finally out.

I see some people are still hating on the mere idea of Hollywood adapting anime properties. Come on you guys, don't act like young angry children. Even if the movie is terrible, this will only make non-anime fans more aware of anime in general and its scource material. I'm still hoping for a decent success with this movie.

IMO the visuals look great but I expect hollywood to completely FUBAR the story. I already hate that they're calling her "Major" not "The Major" or "Major Kusanagi" but "Major" like that is her actual first name and not a title. It's like nails on a chalkboard. But the real fear is that they'll add some romance B.S. and/or a bunch of political preaching.

Because politics never came up in the original franchise .

What a stupid complaint.
Also the anime movies and shows are all incredibly political. If you don't like that, this franchise isn't for you.

Because this film is portrayed wonderfully from a visual standpoint, I can at least watch this movie as a fun time waster. If only the plot isn't a dumb revenge story I would've had much more enthusiasm for it. Oh well, if this fails I still got Alita: Battle Angel to look forward to next year Very Happy

Not all politics are the same. V for Vendetta's movie was criticized for changing a British political story surrounding the Margaret Thatcher ministry to be about American anti-Bush sentiments. If "Major" or any other future adaption is suddenly facing off against some cartoonish fascist named Tonald Drump then its worthy of an eyeroll.

Looking forward to this. I'm down for any live action adaptation. I thought Dragonball Evolution was fun so it'll be really hard for me to dislike this one haha.

It's nice to see that people can enjoy it for what it is instead of howling at the prospect of whitewashing, or whatever may be. Looks like a pretty solid live adaption compared to its source material.

I'm more concerned about them changing it to a revenge plot and making it into a rip off of Lucy than whatever political themes they focus on.

Why? So what if it's relatable to current politics?

This is untrue. In the perception of unrelated people, live-action adaptations override the original. Like how anime adaptations override the part of the manga version that got animated, for example. Only in very rare cases have I ever turned to the already animated parts of a manga after watching it's respective anime. Or read the book after watching a movie version of it. It's the same with reboots. What came before will eventually fade out of existence in the public eye. Or how many people do you think will go out and watch the original King Kong (1933) after seeing the new release Skull Island (2017) in theatres? (Enthusiasts are different, obviously.)

So what live-action adaptions of anime actually do is to chip away at anime in general. It's not as dramatic as it sounds, won't diminish the original and will bring attention to the franchise, but don't confuse what adaptions do to the original in the public eye.

As they say, there is no Tsukihime anime.
