The major problem of the Ufotable Fate franchise is they don't know who exactly they're aiming for, also, they expected you to watch Fate/Stay Night 2006 from Studio DEEN/Read the route or seen Unlimited Blade Works 2014, this isn't really for newcomers as much as it is to see your favorite fights animated from the visual novel.

It's very hard to call this just a glorified ad for the Fate/Stay Night visual novel when they take out all the inner monologue that help us get to know Shirou. I understand skipping things the audience has seen already, but they they've made this movie inaccessible to people who haven't seen anything from this franchise, fans of the VN will gush and give it a pass because Ufotable's animation is pretty.

My 1,000th post is a Fate post, YAY!

I've seen Stay Night and even then it was an incomprehensible mess. I know a few of the key UBW and Zero plot points, but even as a 'sequel' it just isn't that good. It tries to be a mystery, but being a mystery doesn't mean keeping everything a secret until the end. You're supposed to be given a big question at the beginning, or in the second act, then slowly trickle out the clues.

Heaven's Feel doesn't do that...at all...it's just bad.

But this movie is the beginning. Remember it's the first of 3 so of course it won't give many answers.

I will say the biggest flaw is that it feels like a bunch of scenes lined up together rather than a flowing narrative. Skipping over common knowledge stuff was fine since yeah, this is mostly for the fans. But the most important aspect is the relationship between Shiro and Sakura and they nailed that part.

If anyone is planning on seeing it heed my advice: get your tickets the day they go on sale. My showing was sold out so they added a 2nd showing. That showing sold out too so they added a 3rd. It was nuts.

It doesn't need to give them yet, but they needed to drag the build up to the mystery itself. It didn't feel like act one...at all...

Being the old guy in the room (47), I have to disagree and frown at all of this blunt, un-explained or un-informed criticism, considering the fact that Fate/HeavensFeel is very refined, beautifully illustrated and matched with amazing 3DCG effects that I have not seen done before in an Anime. The battle scenes will Extremely well done, and had our little theater cheering at one point. To suggest that it just sucks or should be avoided with no explanation actually invalidates those opinions, as people are smarter than that and no one pays much attention to tomatoes thrown at the wall

Now the basic theatrics aside (because there is very little to criticize there), there is always room for improvement as there is with any movie or anime.. One I saw here and in other places that I agree with is that you can't enjoy this anime unless you understand the lore of the Fate universe and have seen Unlimited Blade Works through to the end (as so many references as well as the dejavu moments before the war really click well if you have). I had only the Fate/UBW and Fate/Zero so far, and with those I understood enough to feel as though I missed nothing. This is not something that can be fixed easily however, as Fate is a deep and complex story with rich backstories, rivalries and unique histories that on-mass cannot be quickly overcome for new viewers which puts this movie into a more niche audience.

This could have been presented in the beginning of the movie instead of showing all of the before-day-clips, which while neat were not enough on their own to provide a first-time audience with the background they would need. Perhaps instead the beginning of the Fate movies should spend that 5 or 10 minutes to build a short anime segment that walks the audience through some of the basics? Somewhat like those old Naruto description high-level overviews - remember the ninja-network news? Clearly not exactly like that, but I think more history and backstory can be covered more quickly that way instead of trying to align the audience using events of the days/weeks leading up to the war.

I thought the dialogue among the characters was excellently storyboarded and brilliantly voiced by the actresses and actors both, and that after just watching UBW and Z, it is easy to tell that they put their All into the voices. The sound effects were very good too, so the audio-side of this anime would be hard to critique accurately.

The artwork was _Amazing_, with alot of detail shots that were stunning in their quality. Even some of the simple ones like the classroom scene with all the desks, panning out; really top notch. My artist friend and I saw many examples of this, and it really adds flavor to the anime, and reminds us that this is was a labor of love, the polar opposite of Naruto Shippudden Episode 167. I can't wait to buy it so I can capture those for wallpapers. I would enjoy seeing someone try and challenge this with examples from the movie, as I don't think it can be critiqued rationally.

The ending was also Very well done, making a perfect tie to the next episode in the Heaven's Feel trilogy. Again it is necessary to have seen UBW and Z, maybe even more, to fully appreciate all of the connections in this anime. That would be my only observation, and that considering the next two installments in HF trilogy will take us even further into the Fate universe and deeper into the story, it may be wise to consider putting a clever opening sequence in them to catch the audience up to speed and buffer new viewers as much as possible with enough backstory to enjoy the anime at it's fullest.

Nicely done, to me it's a 9 out of 10 stars, and we can't wait for the next!!!

There's a lot to unpack in that comment, but rather than sound dicky I'll just work on a review. That way I can explain myself better...

...although now that I've said that I do sound a little uninformed, which isn't my intent...

Hopefully they get this to Ottawa. Don't want to drive for eight hours just to watch a movie.

Yeah, this. I was originally going to try and see it the Saturday before Thanksgiving, but working AnimeNYC put a crimp in that. Tickets still sold out quickly regardless, like a couple days after they went on sale. Village East Cinemas in Manhattan originally had one more showing planned the Tuesday after at 7pm, but that also sold out relatively quickly. Tried buying a ticket at the box office a week or so after they announced the screening, after seeing a delayed screening of the Second Love Live Sunshine concert in Saitama, but they were sold out and the lady behind the counter told me to check online to see if they add any more showings like they likely would.

A couple days later, they added a Wednesday evening showing, but I didn't get a ticket immediately because I needed to wait for my paycheck to clear. Mistake, it sold out soon later. However, checking the Village East website on the Sunday after getting home from working AnimeNYC and hanging out after, I saw they added another showing that Wednesday at 7:45, which I was able to get a ticket to. There was also a Saturday morning showing the weekend after Thanksgiving, but that's about it.

The second Wednesday evening showing was still decently packed, so I could see why they continued to add shows.

As for the movie itself, I thought it was a very good adaptation, glossing over a lot of the stuff we've seen in the other routes, using that early montage to great effect. I agree that someone going into this movie blind would likely be lost, but I have to pin that on being an adaptation of the third route of a VN meant to be played in order, so people should have that context. A lot of the scenes that were eagerly anticipated were great spoiler[(mapo tofu, anybody?)], and some of the others that weren't expected got a big reaction as well spoiler[(the bar that made him GAR flashback)] for those in the know, and showing the start of Shirou and Sakura's relationship in the beginning was a good move. Fight scenes continue to be gorgeous (sasuga ufotable) as well.

One thing I will complain about is the lack of Shirou's inner dialogue preventing us from seeing some of his reactions to the revelations of the previous Grail War and what Kerry was like during it, though I understand that wouldn't work real well in a visual medium. Still should've shown him react in some manner to those things though. As for not having a central question to the movie, there kinda is one or two: spoiler[who is the Shadow, what is their relation to Sakura and to Zouken], but I don't think that's what you're talking about there.
