Yuki Yuna is certainly the best magical girls show I have seen after Madoka, but it feels weird to me to compare both shows. Madoka Magica (tv series) is a masterpiece because it redefined its genre, has depth, top notch production values and does not waste any minute of its run.

One day a magical girls show might challenges Madoka, but from what I have watched from Yuki Yuna (first season), it is an imitation with occasional neat ideas, but the writing is nowhere near as expertly written and directed and meanders in its first half. I might adjust my position if I watch season 2 of Yuki Yuna, but season 1 did not leave a lasting mark on me.

I haven't caught up on the second season. But the way in which season 1 of Yuki Yuna is a Hero spoiler[haphazardly throws all of the tragedy built up over the 2nd half back in the viewers face at the last minute with no explanation was insanely frustrating.]

Comparing Yuki yuna to Madoka is like comparing Paladins to Overwatch, just saying.

Yuuki Yuuna is a huge response to Madoka Magica in marketing terms. Multiple interviews showcase the producers and director of the show knew exactly how to ride the wave that drowned many others and become one of the two post-madoka Henshin Heroine that got a foothold.

They knew that at this point nobody expected any magical girl airing at 1 AM in the morning to not be dark, as such, they avoided certain cliches used to establish that. (Like the dark foreboding dream at the beginning of episode 1.)
That was further explored with the show's unusual plot structure. As the MBS producer hinted at, they knew a lot of shows were killing off their characters, so they sought to avoid that. This led to a plot structure that completely avoided the overused shock factor of that time period, spoiler[all death flags dissolve in episode 5, and the twist is casually explained in episode 6, with no shock factor involved until late episode 10]

Plus it really lucked out overall too, things like the resurgence of japanese folklore themes in japanese fantasy media and neofolk music that started around '12 really helped to set up the landing ground.

Plot-wise though, I don't think it actually tried to stick it up to Madoka and the precedents it had set. The "clash" of ideas is mostly born from the character-first approach the show takes, over a plot-first. As the creator of the series himself said, its a series that makes you value the character's daily lives, and there is an effort to not only do the typical "slice of life furthers the drama" route, but also a "drama furthers the slice of life" route. This clash a bit with the style of Madoka, but I think the model was created by the author's previous experience with how people reacted to a certain popular manga he made.

Yup. This right here. I have no interest in anything else Yuyuyu related due to the way the ending of the first season just plain did not mesh whatsoever with everything that had been established prior. A shame too, cause Yuyuyu was a pretty good show otherwise.

My thoughts run very similarly to this, especially with Madoka. With Yuki Yuna though, I've barely gotten past the 3rd or 4th episode, because it felt too much like a "me, too" show, only less compelling and a little artificial spoiler[(along with some wary fetishism concerning Mimori)]. I really do want to finish it, mainly to see if it will improve, but the way it grated me from the start always makes me think otherwise.

However, as great as I thought Madoka was, I think one (other) that rivals, and maybe even surpasses, its own heights, is (was?) 2001's largely-forgotten Alien 9. Not quite "magical girl" in the traditional sense, but it might have been even more harder-hitting and effectual than what would come over a decade later. I always considered it to be a masterpiece in its own right, but I was struck by how favorably it paralleled and stood against Madoka in a recent rewatch. I'd say that's just how good A9 really was, rather than that Madoka was diminished in comparision.

I was thinking about watching Yuki Yuna, but :

Quote:
The girls of Yuki Yuna eventually regain the bodily functions they sacrificed for their power

really killed any interest I had in the show and I'm glad I found that out before I watched it, there's little I hate more than show that just walk back on important event like this. It just force an happy ending for the sake of it and make lights of any future event.

Lol no.

I mean, I like the 2nd cours of Yuuki Yuuna. The writing and overall quality of the show has increased significantly. Whereas they completely took the easy route out the last season and sharted a happy ending for all, it looks like they're trying to make up for that mistake. Only time will tell.

But it really can't compare to Madoka. The level of depth in the Madoka series is incomparable. As much as I've enjoyed watching YY, there is nothing genre defining about it. Most of the cast are throwaway characters with little charm, there is little to be said morally and in the end there's nothing we haven't seen already. What it does have though is pretty visuals and a atmospheric soundtrack. In other words, mostly style.

For some reason, reviewers on this site seem to love YY. Figures.

I can tell you now, as a fan of the show since it's first day of airing, watching every episode as they were put online... You'd be glad to see them get their functions back after the hell they went through.

Yeah, not really.

I enjoyed YuYuu (despite that awful ending), but it's pretty much as much a Madoka imitation as you can be, with Togo and Yuuna as straight up poorly defined expys of Homura and Madoka.

PMMM also never engaged in the amount of schoolgirl-moe-time for cuteness points YY did. Instead all of its character interactions, even the fun ones, were meanginful.

I will never understand the logic of focusing so much on the ending of S1 when it has follow-up content that so far has not engaged in the same sort of resolution.

What do introvert Madoka and extrovert Yuuna even have in common beyond pink hair and selflessness? (Which are aspects they share with a thousand other magical girl MCs)

Amazing article, ANN. Bravo!
Quote:
Pretty much everyone these days knows who paved that particular road.
Erm, I don't know? Princess Tutu? Mai-HiME (not really a magical girl show, but the same can be said about YuYuYu)? Uta Kata? Or maybe Utena? Or Nanoha which Madoka references heavily, for an obvious reason? Although you can even say it was Sailor Moon where all the characters died, and more than once.
Quote:
Daybreak Illusion was a notable early imitator
A show that was in production before Madoka even aired copied Madoka? Sure, ANN. Sure.

Do I need to say that the rest of the article is not even worth reading when the author knows pretty much nothing about the genre and the shows he's writing about?

Oh, right, there is one good thing about the article, its conclusion:
Quote:
In this respect, Yuki Yuna Is a Hero comes off less like as an imitator of Madoka Magica and more as its own response to that series, which allows it to be more innovative in its ideas rather than feeling derivative. Yuki Yuna acknowledges Madoka Magica, but it's not beholden to its same ideas and execution, and it even seems to be challenging Madoka's approach to its story and characters.
Can't say I understand what's the point of the text then though.

So YuYuYu has "challenged Madoka's legacy" by having characters instead of walking targets of ironic demises and the writer's cringe-worthy hateboner for justice? Laughing

Yeah, no. That is called doing the basics. Yuki Yuna's Taisha for example, is basic after the fleshing-out done in the first half of S2, a group of government officials and parents who would really rather not sacrifice these girls, but war is war, and they'd die anyway if the enemy isn't destroyed. It is not as deep and interesting as Nerv, its Basic shit. 5/10. QB on the other side? Stuff like "mankind is just cattle" is so tryhard it causes physical pain to me, the crappy attempt to hide the idiocy of it all under "it's 2deep 4 you humans to understand" doesn't fool me. Laughing

Who could you could consider Madoka Magica a masterpiece I don't agree with you I hate that show. I consider that anime infamous because I not help redefined the genre is helped killed it. Madoka Magica is absolute disgrace to the magical girl genre along with rest of the show that its footsteps. I fell I am the only one who thinks that deconstruction of genre are bad for the industry and I wish people critical panned Madoka Magica not praised it along with the rest hateful anime shows Yuki Yuna, Magical Girl Razing Project and upcoming Magical Girl Site.

Because they already did it? Who am I to care about drama, suffering, hardships, etc. that can just be magicked away as if they never happened. It's the same issue I have with Clannad's final conclusion in that everything that the main character(s) has gone through is rendered pointless by deus-ex-machina intervention and instead of characters growing and overcoming the challenges put forth, a big reset button is basically pushed.

I have no interest in going through that again with Yuyuyu.
