I actually really like this casting. While Toya and the father are interesting choices, everyone is solid. Having seen Grimgar recently, I think Justin Briner would be a great Yukito.

I figured we were in for more Tsubasa reprisals after Monica and Jason, but they ended up going for fresh voices for nearly everyone else. I think they made the right call, and it's a great cast.

Just finished watching the first episode of the dub, and I'm pleased with everyone so far.

At least Deku and Bakugo admitted their love for one another in one universe.

She hasn't been voiced in the series yet. Typically initial simuldub cast announcements only cover characters that appear in the first episode.

Just watched episode one of the Clear Card dub. Acting-wise everyone did a phenomenal job, especially Mikaela as Kero. Caitlin Glass proves her directing skills; the tactic and intention of the characters' takes were spot on. Everyone was perfectly cast...

...literally except for Sakura and Syaoran!! They are horribly, horribly miscast, voice-wise. Monica and Jason sound like adults trying to be kids. I mean their in their 40s! Jason also plays Syaroan in the same kind of gentle tone as Tsubasa, which doesn't work here (different Syaoron), plus in a high-pitched voice. The spoiler[British accent] they put on Eriol is so forced and awkward too. Big, big mistake!!!

Whoever cast this show just chose "popular" veteran actors to draw attention to this dub and it's totally unacceptable. All of the younger characters in this show (Naoko, Chiharu, Yamazaki, Tomoyo) have actors in their 20s playing them. Literally FUNimation you could have picked ANYONE else, like Bryn Apprill, Jeannie Tirado, Alexis Tipton, Sarah Wiedenheft, Felecia Angelle, Jad Saxton, Jill Harris, Lara Woodhull, etc. The list goes on. I know ranting won't change anything but it's super frustrating. If the original gets redubbed than these are the voices we're stuck with. I just don't know why any dub of this series can't get the two leads right. Kari and Mona were unnaturally awful in Movie 2 and Carly and Rhys (while good) were victim the horrible Cardcaptors edits.

Are Monica and Jason super nice and talented people? Yes. Do they deserved it as talented, competent actors? Yes. But voice-wise I'm sorry they just don't!!!

By the same toke, getting a 40-year-old Japanese woman to reprise her role of Sakura might sound too forced. For Syaoran, they could have gotten a younger* guy like Dallas Reid.

*I have not really seen the original "Cardcaptor Sakura" in either language, so I might be assuming too much. That is, I have only seen clips or throught channel surfing.

I thought Eriol's voice was fine, but yeah, agreed.

Sakura's voice isn't cute/sweet enough. The Shaoran in this dub isn't Shaoran, but some nerd who happens to look exactly like him. He's supposed to have some brattiness in his voice, reduced now by having went into chill mode by the time of Clear Card. Not a fan of Tomoyo's VA either, who tries to sound like the JP VA but just always sounds tired, out of breath, and also older.

Everyone else does sound A-OK (Kero's indeed good, and also Touya and Yukito/Yue in particular. Exactly how I imagined the former of those two to) but damn, that's a strikeout on the 3 most prominent characters right there, at least for me... after finally watching and being engrossed in the original a little while ago, and being familiar with a great new English casting of the other legendary magical girl show, I really, REALLY wanted this to be better.

Unless someone from Japan wants to get involved for whatever reason, ADR directors at funi cast their own shows

Touche Smile But Sakura Tange sounds natural in the Japanese. Monica does not.

Right? I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way. Natalie Hoover sounds like she's full of helium!!! (I actually met her and she's really, really nice, probably the most humble VA I've ever met, but I just don't think she suits this role...sorry.) Granted the Japanese kind of sounds that way, but someone who has a voice that's more naturally girly like Alexis Tipton would have been better.

Speaking of Shaoran, you know who would have been perfect? Ryan Reynolds. Listen to her performance of female Shido in Date a Live. Dallas Reid maybe too. And I actually liked the voice of Eriol (Micah is a very competent actor), but the accent was just off-putting.

I know they do. I'm talking about Caitlin Glass. She (or whomever else that may or may not have been involved in the casting decision) just picked Monica because A) Monica is a 20 year veteran in the industry and FUNi is tying to attract viewers because of her acting ability, B) FUNi is trying to hype up old fans of Tsubasa to watch CCS, C) Monica is a humble, super nice person who actually deserves it (fact) and/or D) Caitlin and Monica are bffs in real life, without taking any consideration for the character.

It's probably a combination of all those things honestly. I'm just saying that its unfair and that Caitlin should have cast a more natural sounding voice for the role, not someone she's close to or for publicity reasons. I don't actually know if the director is involved in casting or not though, so maybe it wasn't Caitlin. But as much as I love Monica and Jason they just don't aren’t the right fits. They've been so many leads already give it to someone else.

The answer is surprisingly simple. Caitlin confirmed on twitter earlier today that she cast Monica and Jason as an homage to Tsubasa.

kh_gal, the Funi Ryan Reynolds is a woman. I can't imagine how many Deadpool jokes she has gotten.

This made me laugh harder than it should’ve. Thank you.

Honestly I thought everyone sounded fine. Really the only thing I had a hard time getting used to (as someone who discovered CCS via the Nelvana dub) was Kero-chan not sounding like a wanna-be tough guy.

It was like watching the new dub of Sailor Moon and hearing Luna not sound like a British nanny. I get those changes can be unnecessary, but it’s so ingrained in my nostalgia that I almost expect it. Not that I wanted Funimation to do that, but it definitely messed with my head a bit lol

While I don’t dislike it to the same degree as others in this thread, I absolutely agree with the sentiment. The Tsubasa throwbacks are basically just fanservice. Fanservice that only a select few people will appreciate at that. It does nothing to help the dub and it totally kills the emotional impact of Sakura and Syaoran’s reunion.

It’d be alright if they sounded anything like the characters they’re supposed to be playing, but they really don’t. Their vocal performances give off the impression that they’re channeling the experience they had working on Tsubasa rather than acknowledging them as seperate characters. Which is a very bad move.

The rest of the cast is actually pretty decent. Kero is a bit flat, but other than that the side characters (Especially Clifford Chapin as Toya and Natalie Hoover as Tomoyo) sound more or less exactly like they should. It’s genuinely a shame that they’re let down by the poor casting choice for the leads. If only they’d had that same mindset when casting Sakura and Syaoran.

I guess that throwaway Geneon dub of the 2nd movie is the best Cardcaptor Sakura will ever get. I mean, sure this one is better acted and has a tighter supporting cast. But that dub totally nailed Sakura, Syaoran and Kero. That part is kinda important.
