Wow, I can't say I didn't see this coming..
I feel for the people who went in on this and now are getting the shaft..
Not knocking this game, but I never got in on the Kickstarter.. I ended up buying into it later and the minatures are a real PITA to put together..

Shame actually because they looked good.

And the clock hopefully ticks towards the final rights expiration in a few years.

I hear that.. but we have heard this line before. back in the early 2000's and then again around 2010. They could just as easily just reacquire the rights like they have in the past.. unless HG's relationship with Tatsunoko has really soured.

Pretty much everybody got screwed here: the backers who didn't get their stuff, Palladium whose reputation is now probably irrevocably ruined, and Macross fans who are still prevented from getting the material they actually want.

The thing that pisses me off the most is that the company that was contracted explicitly to prevent this kind of thing from happening, Ninja Division, seems to have walked away scot free, and is now enjoying their own success with a bunch of other anime-themed projects. I'm not saying Palladium is blameless here (and they've certainly been involved in a lot of scummy things in the past few decades), but the fact that they seem to be getting 100% of the blame for this from fans feels suspiciously like longstanding, outspoken members of the internet roleplaying game community - who came into this kickstarter with an axe to grind against Palladium's upper management - being all to happy to kick Palladium when they're down.

Anyway, at the end of the day, I'm out about 85 bucks for undelivered product, and have sent in my request for an equivalent amount of replacement material. Crying or Very sad

Aaaaaand the Macross Robotech license continues to be one giant cluster-eff. I swear, this has to be the most cursed license in all of anime. Even Voyager's license for Yamato hasn't produced this much offal.

Why can't the "Robotech" franchise go the "Voltron" route and start doing original shows? Just remove all the exclusively Macross-y stuff and maybe redesign the mechs. "Robotech" fans will be happy, and "Macross" fans will be happy. Everybody wins. If Sony can let Marvel borrow the rights to Spider-Man, I think this is possible.

Yeah not good at all for Palladium. Their reputation hasn't been very high for a long long time in certain circles, and this is more gasoline onto the flames. I've read some pretty damning stories about them, but haven't really bothered to look into it. Though I do agree with the opinion that their Palladium RPG system is pretty crap. It is fruits of the last millennium (so I round its age to one thousand years) and should have been buried with it.

Harmony Gold doesn't have/isn't willing to invest the money in doing that. They tried making a pilot for a new series ... by having fans front the cost. Laughing

WEP has done a far better job at keeping Voltron around than HG has been with Robotech. Since the 80s, Voltron has received three new TV series. Since the 80s, Robotech has received two direct-to-video films, one of which was just a dub of 30 year old footage.

Very sad that all of the people that contributed to this doomed Kickstarter are being forced to pay full price for half of the content they were guaranteed. Sad If there's a bright side to this, it's that at least this mishap could discourage what little fans Robotech has left from further supporting the rotting franchise.

Voyager has actually done better with the license if Funimation getting 2199 is any indicator. I regret being harsh about their handling of it here in the past now...

Also this apparently isn't the first time Palladium hasn't delivered on stuff. Funny that they partnered with a company that also cannot deliver on anything either.

From what I saw of the RRT material, it looked decent enough.
From how I understand the linked post to the Kickstarter, it was one compounded issue after another and Palladium couldn't recover on the money end. Not that I blame HG for pulling their license.

In all fairness, from the way the fillings are going in HG's trolling of the Battletech IP again, HG could get slapped harder than when they tried trolling Hasbro several years ago over the Jetfire Transformer reissue. So maybe cutting ties might not of been a bad thing...

And with that, the first few nails may have been hammered down in Robotech's coffin.

Are copyright problems the reason why most Robotech projects never came to fruition?

From what I've heard here and there, the rights to do any new Robotech show (or even a new animated movie) is tied up in that proposed live-action film that may or may not ever get made. It was like that when Warner Bros was originally "developing" it a decade ago, and it's that way now with Sony. I think the wriggle room is anything like the Robotech: Love Live Alive OVA that only had a little new animation but was mostly an adaptation of an existing film.
