EP7 is probably my favourite arc of Umineko, so I'm happy to see the manga out in English at last. I haven't been buying the Umineko manga (the volumes are huge and I really don't have room on my bookshelf for all of them) but I'm thinking I'll probably get this one.

It just occured to me and it's rather interesting. Erika's view of love and how it makes you see things that don't really exist is suddenly validated. Kinzo's obsessive love for Beatrice had him believe that his daughter looking so much like her is a result of her being reincarnated, rather than just a startling resemblance, and it leads to him locking her up, isolating her from the world, and eventually spoiler[raping her.]. Just as Erika's love for her boyfriend deceived her into believing that he still loved her back, resulting in an incredibly vindictive sociopath when she found out the truth, Kinzo's love for Beatrice blinded him to what was real, leading him to commit a great sin.

It's easy to completely dismiss Erika's view as having no basis or being wrong because she's been such a vile villain to so many, someone like her having a claim that runs completely counter to words that have been spoken for a pretty long while now, clearly it must be wrong right? And yet we have something in the following arc that lends a bit of credence to it, to say nothing of her own personal experiences. That's what I love, Umineko doesn't automatically dismiss values it doesn't agree with, so long as they aren't toxic and/or harmful. Problem is, Erika is definitely a toxic and/or harmful person.

Will is a great choice for a protagonist this arc. He has a bit of a gruff exterior, has his quirks, but he's a deeply empathetic person, but he's also smart enough not to let his feelings get in the way of his deductive reasoning, which was a problem Battler frequently struggled with. He's a nice compromise between the kinds of detectives Battler and Erika were. His dynamic with Lion is great too.

It's kind of difficult not to question Bernkastel's motives here. Given how hung up she is about losing, it's kind of hard to believe she just took her loss in stride. She must have something in mind when she asks Will to do this.

On my first playthrough, EP7 was probably my least favorite, but now it's in the Top 3 for me. It is just so much.

I remember when playing the visual novels, at the beginning, with its brand new set of protagonists, episode 7 just felt weird. I didn't quite understand the series back then.

But then, hints and clues start to make sense. Then that finale when the truth(?) was finally revealed, man, that was really something. Shocked

yeah, the next half is VERY emotionally draining. if umineko was intellectually difficult before, now the difficulty shifts to the emotions.. and it keeps on being that way for ep08 as well.

Ahhhh, I love Episode 7! I'm very happy you're enjoying it, although I have to say I am a bit disappointed in the manga adaptation of it. Eita Mizuno isn't my favorite artist to work on this series, and I often felt myself disconnected from the story while reading the manga version. Maybe I just had expectations that were impossible to match! It is my favorite arc, after all.

Your immediate affection for Episode 7 and your dislike for 5 and 6 is really very interesting to me. A lot of people, when Umineko first came out, considered 5 and 6 to be the highlight of the series, and would say it all falls apart and turns to shit with 7. Even as someone who absolutely adores 7 with all of their heart, I have to concede that 5 is a close second. Perhaps it has to do with the manga, and not the story itself? I played the game way before reading the manga, so my experience was probably vastly different than yours. (Or maybe you don't like 5 and 6 because you just plain hate Erika! I wouldn't be able to blame you, honestly.)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by saying that Bernkastel feels unnecessary, considering that without her, spoiler[the premise for this Episode would be impossible]. Or did you mean that you felt like she doesn't do much but chime in from time to time? Regardless, if you want Bernkastel to be a little more involved with the story, you should be getting your wish in the very next volume! spoiler[(Unfortunately.)]

By the way, knowing that those who post in this thread are those who have followed what's going on, what are your opinions on Battler's depiction in the manga so far?

Generally, I thought he was pretty awesome when he stood back up by the end of Episode 6, but after the loose threads were revealed in Episode 7, I really have mixed feelings about his characterization.
