It will be a very sad day all over the comics industry when it's Stan Lee's time.
Another icon leaves this world. I'm sure Steve & Jack Kirby will be partying upstairs. |

At least Stan makes it a point to give deserved credit to those 2, which is something Bob Kane should have done to Bill Finger while Finger was alive. |

Maybe you want to remove the "family" part, since he died alone, childless and without any known relative. In fact, they took two days to find out he already died in his house. What a horrible way to die, in my opinion... |

The situations involving Stan Lee and Bob Kane were very different; Finger, Jerry Robinson and others were contractually ghosting for Kane. Even so, Kane was a vainglorious sort who didn't like to share credit even when he was contributing little or nothing to 'his' work. It seems that Steve Ditko wanted to be known more for his later work. Unfortunately, his writing and drawing had really deteriorated his last years as a comics professional. Luckily for us, he still left a rich legacy of stories and characters at Marvel, Charlton, DC and other publishers. |

Lee kind of gave them credit; Ditko was the only one who fought for-and won- the right to have "plotted by" added to his credit on later Spider-man and Dr Strange comics alongside "penciled and inked by" which in turn forced Lee to go from "written by" to "scripted by" as the comics really were written by the artists. I know it wasn't as bad as the Kane/Finger situation but that was just one comic while Stan Lee took credit for writing on so many titles. Here's to Steve Ditko. May your halo never tickle. |

Yeah Lee did a lot to take credit for what he didn’t do. He was a talented script writer and a great showman, but he built his rep on the backs of his artists/plotters and built an empire on their ideas.

captainmidnight on Youtube made a very good video about these artist being exploited and didn't receive credits on his channel. Not just Bill Finger and Kirby/Ditko, plenty of these comic book writers were used.
On topic, R.I.P Steve Ditko, my condolence to his family and fans. Spidey and Dr.Strange are among my favorite heroes, your legacy will live on. |

There are lots of good things to remember Ditko for, but lets not forget his obsession with objectivism, a singular nasty philosophy.

Ditko never got the credit he deserved. Because of Stan Lee's ego, as far as the general public is concerned it was Stan Lee alone who created Spiderman.

Probably not so much with the partying. No disrespect intended to anyone involved, but Kirby and Ditko had their fair share of disagreements. Ditko was a Randian Objectivist, Kirby was an FDR New Dealer. (And Ditko thought Stan Lee was too far to the left, while Kirby thought Lee too far to the right.) (It's always seemed rather odd that an Objectivist like Ditko could create Spider-Man, a character whose well-known motivation is "with great power comes great responsibility", a decidedly non-Objectivist notion. I'm not sure Ditko ever really talked about that dichotomy, though he generally shied away from publicity in general and didn't give many interviews.) So long, Steve. You gave the world Squirrel Girl. Your talent will be missed. |

Spider-Man was a significant part of my childhood and it’s very disheartening to hear this news.
 RIP, Mr. Ditko. You will be dearly missed and thank you for all that you did.

I was surprised at this news. While I didn't know him I did learn how much he's accomplished in the comic scene. I learned he was a graduate here where I worked. One of my co-workers schooled me in on how he was trying to get him (like he's been doing with other artists) to come and speak at the school. He's been doing sort of a mini spotlight with people from the industry to come into the library and talk about the industry. But he never got back to him. Come to find out the answer he gave me as to why was already the answer as to why. He's extremely solitary, in the sense that he doesn't do events or interviews. Or bother with social media. Smart man. But as it's said, "Let his work speak for itself". That's an important message.
So I'll send my condolences to those close to him. |
