Possible disclaimer: On Twitter and FB, frequently rant about how copyright lasts too long and the devastation American public domain via copyright restoration, retroactive copyright extensions, and trademarking. I have admitted those rants are moot considering I freq. fan translation sites.

The ROM site could have just asked Nintendo for a license.

Would Nintendo have ever granted such a thing, judging from their entire history?

That said... yeah, I don't see how the game industry or the public benefits from console games over 20 years old still being under copyright.

The success of the NES and SNES mini as well as the Virtual Console tell us there's a good argument for why they should protect 20 year old games.

With this unfolding, along with the separate news about the PSX classic's use of an open-source emulator, you can practically hear the sound of torrents whirring into a frenzy. Their cause, illegal as it is, seems almost emboldened.

I guess where all the money goes, that's where it all counts, I suppose.

Like, I love playing video games, and I appreciate the staff and companies that make them, but no one really expected that today's world would be where it is today. For many creators, games are a dime a dozen and unless they are really that invested, the vast majority of them are usually one shots. No one back then would have foreseen a global economy where creativity is stifled and where any investment is at best considering risky and shaky to cultivate a nostalgia driven market. With how everything was back in the heyday, everyone was aiming to be the next big thing, and everything else that wasn't was considered rock bottom. No one either figured that anime and interest in Japanese culture would had been a thing too around the turn of the century.

Sure, you got to roll with the punches, and I am glad that Nintendo is going after those who are profiting illegally off of emulation, but as much as they are going after some big fish, we'll see if they go after anything else. Nintendo is also just as guilty of moneybanking regarding policies about the Virtual Console; ie for every system you own, you have to pay to have it on that console. Heck, maybe they should extend their reach into Shanghai and Moscow considering the bootleg culture over there.

TBH...
i am fine with modern games being protected liek this..

but what about those NES games? They arent made anymore (some are re-released, but msot arent)

if a game hasn't had a copy made and sold in past 10 years it should be accessible by rom means.
Yo uare nto hurting them if they dont make them so nobody can buy them.

NIntendo still sells them by re-releasing them. They also own the games and can do whatever they want with them. That being said,I don't see the point of re-releasing them over and over. Every console since the Gamecube has had the same lineup of older games be they on disc or virtual console.

This post gave me an idea:instead of releasing the games on platforms or on VC,why not just release a system-specific compilation of games and release it digitally or on disc?(Yes,I know that's what the mini systems are for,but hear me out). Years ago Atari games were released under Activision Anthology;I had a pc disc. This had just about every Atari 2600 game. So why couldn't Nintendo do the same thng?

I feel they chose LoveRoms as their target simply because LoveRoms chose to have Nintendo imagery plastered all over their site.

Made them an easy target.
