Yup, Weta did some interesing concept art, but I think it's a safe assumption by now that the NGE movie will remain just that. Unless an investor pops up out of nowhere, I don't see ADV going anywhere with this for the foreseeable future.

Now that was interesting news. Will this become the next Buffy? I wouldn't count on it, but at least it's interesting to see an adaptation that doesn't end up like a movie. After all, the longer runtime is something that can contribute greatly to chances for character development, and not only in anime.

Haven't we seen all of this information before? Nothing has changed except that now all of the information is now clumped up.

I noticed the similarity between Gremlins & Pet Shop when I first saw the anime.

O________________________O

OK, how many planned anime-turned-Hollywood there anyway? Has anyone been keeping track, making a list?

I count (those whose properties have been bought, not necessarily started on yet):
~Speed Racer
~Transformers
~Monster
~Dragonball Z
~Evangelion
~Real Bout High School
~Battle Angel Alita
~Petshop of Horrors
~Sailor Moon
~Witch Hunter Robin

Any more? And anyone know which have begun production or planned finishing dates or anything? O_O

Good grief! the LA Witch Hunter Robin has returned from the virtual dead Shocked.

This project must be in some serious pre-production hell here. Last I'd heard it was dead but that was in conjunction with SciFi Channel, which is where the project started off in 2003.

Looking at the names involved it seems the project has changed hands because I don't remember the name "Roy Lee" showing up connected to the project before. So I take it the project has changed hands and probably isn't associated with the SciFi Channel anymore.

Oh well, whatever - at least the project isn't totally dead and if the (Dragonriders of) Pern TV project is back in the works (that's been in pre-production hell longer than LA WHR) then I guess we still may see this someday Smile.

Not to start anything serious, but I was at the ADV panel at Anime Boston this past weekend, and someone brought up "What about the live-action Eva rumors we're been hearing about?" and if I remember correctly (can't remember who said it) the answer was "All we can tell you at this time is that they're not rumors," or something to that effect.

If that's all that they think the Sailor Moon story line is about, then we're in BIG trouble! Besides, at least everything is completely covered up (except for the transformations)! I've see series (both anime and regular TV) where they are MUCH LESS covered up!

Seeing Witch Hunter Robin wouldn't be too bad, they probably can't screw that up as badly as they might Sailor Moon.

That means it's still stalled and "We have no clue as to when it's actually going to appear in movie theatres."

I think the headline for this article is misleading.

Daily Variety was the publication that reported the Geena Davis/Sailor Moon Disney Project about 5 years ago, probably in 1997 as that paragraph opens:

Quote:
Since 1997, Hollywood has been acquiring major anime properties like "Sailor Moon,"

See http://www.iwaynet.net/~sos/liveaction.html

They never actually said that Sailor Moon has been newly licensed in any way. I think the writer is merely referencing that old story (which never lead to anything) since their publication was the one to break it, after all.

So Hollywood really is running out of ideas!

I'd give most of these projects, uh, 10 years for fruition...by then the tweens of the early 2000s anime boom would have grown up and have moviegoing spending cash...unless of course tickets by then would cost as much as anime DVDs (they currently cost as much as a volume of manga)...then they'd go "never again".

And that is if this generation of anime fans are really fans and not just followers of fads. Unlike comic books which are almost mainstream in which every baby boomer has at least heard of them if not grew up with them.

The titles they pick though would sound too dated. Comic superheroes, after all, seem more immortal. If ever, they'd just make for moderately ok movies where people don't care where the source material came from.

I second the choice of Chobits...and I'd also go for a live-action Tsukuyomi Moonphase...and To Heart with real highschool girls. If these won't entertain, they're sure to bring nightmares even worse than Petshop of Horrors.

Hmmm, a 'Witch Hunter Robin' tv series? Interesting. I could see that. I just not to long ago finished the anime and I enjoyed it. But I'm more curious to see the 'EVA' and 'Battle Angel Alita', movies get underway. At least it's not just word of mouth anymore about 'Cameron' directing it.

I would be seriously shocked if any of these actually end up completed. And even if they did, they would probably bear only the slightest resemblance to the original material, especially EVA. Then again, I started to absolutely despise EVA somewhere mid-series, so maybe I'd actually like the movie if it were radically different! Laughing

The only alleged American live action movie based on an anime I care about is "Monster". It's my favorite anime/manga of all time, and its setting and subject matter would make it far, far easier to adapt into live action when compared to Sailor Moon or EVA. Add to that the fact that the current screenwriter attached to the project got an Oscar nod for A History of Violence, and I'd say Monster might have the best chance of getting off the ground before the rest.

I've got mixed feelings about that, though. On one hand, 'woohoo, more people will know about Monster!' on the other, 'pleeeease don't suck'.

So's Japan, with all the remakes and sequels. It's a global thing.
