So this is just Obata doing this? Doesn't make much sense since he and Ohba are still working together. It'll probably have almost no text or be completely textless, just being pictures of shinigami on Earth.

I'm honestly surprised they don't capitalize on what's probably their most famous franchise more. The lore for Death Note leaves plenty of room for all kinds of stories, characters, and settings and yet this is, what? The third one-shot related to the series? (including the pilot)
What about the feudal era when the notes were scrolls? What about when a note lands outside Japan? What about something more actiony, romantic, dramatic, tragic, whatever genre you want?

I hope it's 10 pages of Near playing with his action figures, then pausing and smirking about that time he defeated Kira.
I love that smug little douchebag.

I hear you and kind of agree with you but sometimes it's better to know when to stop.
I've seen a lot of people who said the second half of Death Note is so much weaker than the first. Also there are ton of tv-shows and movies Death Note related. Really, there are like.
5 movies already? 4 Japanese and 1 American and there's going to be the 2nd.

I doubt it'll be the exact same, but it sounds like it's still partly inspired by the Light up the New World movie.

All but one of those films is an adaptation of the manga's storyline. I'm talking about expanding the universe, not retelling it.
The second half for the original manga (and anime) is criticized because of one major character's death at the midpoint; that's purely a matter of character writing.
Can Ohba ever recreate the memorable characters and stakes of the original? Who knows, but I'm still surprised they haven't tried something new with this IP.
