I wonder whether they'll translate 'okama' as 'tranny' this time around, like back in the good, old Gintama days.

Depends who streams it. Funimation definitely won't they always soften translations when it comes to okama stuff, but Crunchyroll might.

Wow, talk about lazy writing. Just copy-paste the same generic trans stereotype we've seen a million times before because doing something original is just too hard, huh?

(Not that anyone should expect originality from like the 500th TV show in the last couple of years with the premise "What if we did, like, Sherlock Holmes, but, like, MODERN, you know?")

Then again Funimation translated 'lolicon' as 'pedophile', which is the opposite of 'softening'...

Ah, well by softening I mean being sensitive towards. Nobody cares if you offended or make fun of lolicons/pedophiles, but making fun of or offending the transgender community is generally frowned upon in America and seen as hateful. That's what got recent video games like Catherine Full Body and AI: The Somnium Files into some hot water with people. But that kind of humor is very popular in Japan. You can find it everywhere, even stuff like Pokénchi, the Pokemon variety show that airs every Sunday where the male comedians dress up as female trainers and do a bunch of skits about it. Hell, it's the whole basis Rocket-dan was modeled after with their crossdressing shenanigans. The "okama bartender" is a pretty standard trope you can see in a lot of Japanese media.
