I discovered this series a few months ago when I signed up to the WSJ app. I find it to be consistently funny.
This is a bit out of character for me but something that (for me at least) undercuts the humour somewhat is the fact that Anya feels like she is disposable. She is given to believe that her "family" is only temporary and that when the spy mission is over she will be abandoned. As the series progresses and the relationships deepen this may become less and less likely but at this stage as far as I can tell Anya still feels like the stability of her position in the family is dependent on her performance of the spy mission. |

I agree that this is an issue. It feels unnecessarily mean in an otherwise light spy caper, and it's something I'll be keeping an eye on as the series goes on. |

Yeah, that aspect could potentially become problematic down the line.
Anyway... yeah, just gave the first volume a read and it's pretty good. I especially like the character design. Story didn't really pick up steam until the three leads got together around the halfway point, but once it did it was a lot of fun. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for stories with telepaths.... regardless, I'm excited for volume 2. |

I’ve been reading and loving Spy x Family since it was only available on the Shonen Jump Manga + app, and I don’t know how I missed that the setting is supposed to be East and West Germany! For some reason, I kept thinking of more Eastern European Soviet States? Blame my poor knowledge of Cold War history, I guess! But that makes so much sense!
I also suspect I’m missing some of the many James Bond references and homages—never been a fan of the Bond franchise—but what I do get is hilarious. When I first heard about the series, I assumed that Anya would be a super smart genius type, so I think it’s important to point out that one of the charms of the story is that Anya is still very much a child. She can read minds, but she doesn’t always understand the implications of what she’s reading, and she still thinks and acts like a kid (and she’s decidedly not better at schoolwork than her peers). She provides an innocence to the implications of scary stuff her parents are involved in, and it’s a good counterbalance. |

Picked up a copy today on the strength of the review.
At the outset, Anya's so called adoption, was temporary and she was disposable. Because of her power, that couldn't be concealed from her. It is not as though Twilight is bringing it up to Anya. That would be cruel. Yor's "marriage" is likewise fake and temporary. In her case it is just a bit more overt and not as potentially cruel. At some point we are likely to see an arc where the Thorn Princess is offered a contract to take out Twilight. From what I've read so far, the entire concept is the forging of a real family out of this collection of three people, each with their own agenda. It should be a fun ride. |
