Damn, people outside of very dedicated parts of fandom nearly stopped remembering what KC even was, let alone it was a juggernaut series in the past - and they try to run the new anime season in 2022. At this point, it more becomes the literal weight of the past that just cannot sink, than actually trying to revive at least the part of the franchise's former glory.

Well, considering the amount of lewds still drawn for this series I wouldn't really call it completely forgotten and in the past. Also, isn't the franchise still recognized in Japan? Anyway, once the second season comes out the series is going to come back into the spotlight once again. That's just how it goes.

If it was 2021 than maybe but it's still a year, a lot things can happen and it might be hit with another delay.

At the same time Azur Lane is doing pretty well when it comes to nautical lewds, Yostar implements new stuff (Operation Siren) and seems to have gotten serious with trying to improve story. Or making it even more complicated.

KC might see a bump but I don't think it will that big.

Fun thing is that for the looks of it, it's a SoL, like what Slow Ahead is doing. While I recognize the tremendous effort from the devs in recognizing that, given the option, many people might not be willing to look at cute shipgirls and act solemn as if in a IJN memorial site, I can't help but think, much like Blizzard and MOBAs, they already utterly lost to Azur Lane as a brand in the cute girls doing ship things department.

The only ones who can counter this threat are Kan-musume (literally, Fleet Girls), girls who possess the spirit of naval vessels from days gone by.

Actually, the correct way to read the term '艦娘' is 'kan-musu'.
For example, in the 'Musashi-san no Heisō Kōza' chapter in Volume 3 of Kantai Collection Dengeki Comic Anthology Sasebo Chinjufu-hen (pub. by Kadokawa/ASCII Media Works), Yukikaze says, '雪風思うんですよ 夜戦でいくら強くても 昼戦で飛行場姫くらいワンパンで沈められないと 艦娘としてダメかな~って。'
In the scene, the furigana for the '艦娘' part of the line spoken by Yukikaze is 'かんむす (kan-musu)'.
If you knew the shortened form of the name of the idol group モーニング娘。Morning Musume is モー娘。MorMusu, probably you could easily understand the '艦娘 kan-musu' way of reading.

Certainly, the meaning of the '艦隊 kantai' part of the term '艦隊これくしょん Kantai Collection' is 'fleet'. But if you take up the kanji '艦', the meaning of the kanji '艦' is 'warship'. So if you state the literal meaning of the term '艦娘 kan-musu', probably 'Warship Girls' is better.

The Kadokawa Shin-Jigen dictionary says:
Quote:
【艦】 なりたち 形声。舟と、音符監(かこいの意→檻)とから成り、敵の攻撃を防ぐために周囲を板で囲った船、「いくさぶね」の意を表わす。 意味 いくさぶね。軍船。「軍艦」。

The Shin Kangorin dictionary says:
Quote:
【艦】 字義 いくさぶね。兵船。軍艦。昔は舟の周囲に板を張り、矢や石を防ぐように造った。 解字 形声。舟+監(音)。音符の監は檻に通じ、おりの意味。敵の攻撃を防ぐため、おりのように四面を板で囲んだいくさぶねの意味を表す。

I wonder what Autumn Cloud-sensei thinks about the postponement of C99.w

I think KanColle's biggest weakness is the fact that it never really left Japan whereas Azur Lane is not only internationally active and readily available to play, they also do collabs with others like Kizuna Ai and Dead or Alive giving them a vastly wider audience. I doubt a lot of westerners would have known about KanColle if not for the anime airing in 2015.

It's honestly shocking how popular KanColle is in the doujinshi/lewd scene. In another topic here on ANN people were talking about how popular Evangelion hentai art was. I got curious how Eva art ranked compared to other popular franchises so I started looking at some numbers. On a major doujinshi site the only franchise with more hits than KanColle (11762 entries) was Touhou at 14035. The 3rd most popular was Idolmaster in the low 7000s, and 4th was Fate around 5500.

hard pass on this. The KanColle anime was pretty bad I don't think I could stomach another 12 episode season.

Azur Lane's anime adaptation was not all that great but soundly trounced it.
Best anime for anime ship girls was Arpeggio of Blue Steel and that is mostly forgotten.

Full disclaimer I don't play either KanColle or Azur Lane.
