Isekai is the cockroach of anime, one fails and eight more just appear.

I certainly think a lot of isekai anime that gets produced is mediocre. Some people seem to lump mediocre/meh together with trash but I reserve that descriptor for anime series that I think are truly awful.

Some of my favourite anime series are isekai. The Twelve Kingdoms, Re:Zero, Cautious Hero, Log Horizon, Tanya the Evil, Overlord, Gate JSDF, No Game No Life, Jobless Reincarnation, Grimgar, So I'm A Spider So What? etc.

There are people who are saying that there's too much superhero content being produced these days and the market is oversaturated.

Whether it's westerns, superheroes or isekai as long as a genre is popular it will keep getting content produced and most of it will be just OK with a few diamonds in the rough. Personally I'm fine with that.

If you don't like isekai that's fine with me. However if you're gonna complain about it it'd be nice to know what genre you would prefer in it's place. What genres do you think are being displaced by isekai?

Don’t recall too many people complaining about that isekai hentai anime with the two guys.

High Fantasy has taken a pretty hard dive. A lot of modern isekai has an over-reliance of game lit to lean on a crutch and excuse for proper world building. Isekai worlds are apparently allowed to be unapologetically tropey, but will suddenly need genre-savvy characters to be completely clueless to tropes for the sake of advancing drama. And apparently there needs to be at least one chapter dedicated to wanting good old-fashioned japanese cooking and recreating soy sauce (or refer to it) in excruciating detail.

Very strong and diamond in the rough isekai stories happen to be well executed and strong stories on their own without the character displacement. The isekai portion is not what the story completely revolves around. The obsession around the displaced character and retreading the beginnings of every other isekai ("except its...!!") is what generates a tired reaction from me.

Am I reading this wrong or does this not make sense at all?

"[S]he seduces him", but yet "despite her efforts, the prince ends up falling for her". Shouldn't the prince fall for her because of her efforts to seduce him instead of despite her efforts?

Re: isekai displacement of genres

I'd love to see more cyberpunk anime myself, but I also don't dislike isekai per se. I just dislike the bad writing in many of them.

I honestly don't remember anyone saying anything at all about that one lol, I actually wouldn't even have remembered it if it weren't for the fact that it's linked in the article.

I'm sorry. I have to focus on something and it may come off as rude. It's not meant to be a personal attack on you or your taste. Just want to make that clear.

Gate? I did watch Gate to completion when it was airing. In a way it was the show I most looked forward to every week. It was not out of any genuine appreciation for the show though. It was out of shock and abject horror. That show is unforgivably blatant jingoistic pro imperialist and pro Japanese remilitarization propaganda. It is one of the most disturbing anime I have ever watched. The idea of people actually enjoying it scares the hell out of me because that means it's effective.

That's the most truth in advertising isekai title I've ever heard and that's saying a lot.

So this is in the same vein of televised hentai titles like Skirt no Naka, Titan's Bride, Fire in his Fingertips, etc.

People who hate on isekai for seemingly no reason do make me laugh.

I can only speak for the anime but I'd heard that the jingoism/propaganda you speak of had been toned down from the books. As it stands there were a couple of times times I rolled my eyes but I could mostly go along with it.

Despite being Australian most of the TV and movies I watched growing up were either from the US or the UK. As my critical faculties began to develop I started to notice that the country that the media I was consuming came from always seemed to be at the centre of the universe whether it was dealing with alien invasions or natural disasters.

I was an outsider looking in as American soldiers and Presidents saved the world with international allies occasionally playing a supporting role. Towards the end of the sci-fi movie Indepence Day the Americans started broadcasting to other nations how to take down the invading alien spaceships. Upon receiving this broadcast one individual from one of these other nations said "what took them so long?" As if it was only natural that the US would be the nation to save the day.

A lot of the things that made some people uncomfortable with Gate JSDF were things I had already experienced similar discomfort with and developed a tolerance for from much of the American and British media I had consumed. You can make an argument that Gate was more extreme in some instances but instead of writing the whole series off I preferred to examine each instance on a case by case basis. Some things I shrugged off as tropes I'd seen a thousand times before and other things I rolled my eyes at.

For myself a key touchstone for comparing Gate to US media is the TV series Stargate SG-1. In the pilot episode of SG-1 aliens came through the Stargate and attacked the military officers guarding the gate carrying one of them off as a prisoner. From there the US government established teams to go through the Stargate and explore the galaxy for any potential threats and possible ways to combat them. For years the US government monopolised the Stargate, interstellar travel and alliances between Earth and extraterrestrial powers. All whilst keeping everything a secret from the general public. As an Australian the idea that the United States or any foreign power for that matter would be representing Earth in forming alliances with extraterrestrials without reading in other nations was disturbing. All that said I still watched and enjoyed the show as well as it's spin-offs.

They say anime isn't a genre, it's a medium.

I say isekai isn't a genre, it's a plot device. Two series featuring isekai can be radically different from each other in tone, theme, setting, etc. Saying you don't like isekai is like saying you don't like time-travel. It's totally possible to like Steins;Gate but not really be into say, Your Name.

Yeah, your right, it doesn't make any sense. Probably some sort of translation error.

Exactly right.

It is just like harem shows. I lived through the early 2000's, when it seemed like every show, no matter what kind, had to have a harem chasing the main character. There had been a couple really popular harem shows, I think Tenchi is a good example, and so the Production Committee powers that be said to the creative staffs, whatever show was proposed, "That's nice, but could you work in five or six girls chasing the MC? The audiences are hot for that right now." And so they beat the idea to death with a club. Entertainment just uses up ideas in cycles, and this is the one we are in now.

There is still a good harem show, once in a while, and eventually there will be an occasional good show set up as isekai. But probably not until we are all mostly sick of it, and some other thing becomes the big fad of the moment.

Not that this show can't be good, or that I won't watch it.
