Saiyuki keeps coming back. I've got to give this franchise credit for its longevity. I've always been intrigued by it but just not inspired enough to give it an honest try. I always remember the look of the main characters...and that the original anime had an opening that had an awesome guitar riff almost exactly like Aerosmith's "Eat the Rich." Am I to assume by this new anime that there's still a big following in Japan? The manga looks like it ended, so what is fueling this?

While the original manga ended, there are like four sequels, the latest of which is ongoing, so I think a lot of the anime sequels cover those various manga.

The manga hasn't really ended yet, due to Kazuya Minekura's various medical & health problems. The third series, SaiyukI Reload Blast, is still ongoing technically.
As for why Saiyuki keeps coming back, it's because it's popular & successful enough in Japan to warrant making more anime adaptations, simple as that. Anyway, in regards to the news at hand, Hazel, Gato, & Ni Jenyi are all reprisals from the prior Saiyuki anime productions, so that's cool. "Even a Worm" is easily one of the absolute best parts of Saiyuki, so I'm looking forward to this adaptation. Reload Gunlock's take on Hazel was interesting, and surprisingly hit some of the same plot points as what the manga would do later on, but the OG version is still the best.

I just wish Steven Foster would actually come back to direct the obvious upcoming dub.

Does he even do ADR work anymore? The most recent credit I could recognize from his encyclopedia page is Hiiro no Kakera from 2014. Though ReLoad, Gaiden, and Blast all had different ADR directors as well so if anything I anticipate the director from Blast coming back if Funimation does the dub again.

The first time I heard about Saiyuki was when I discovered it won the title for best anime from Animage magazine from the year 2000, I've never heard about the manga or anime since it never came out where I live, but I also found out that it got translated in various languages too. The premise sounded interesting, a modern interpretation of Journey to the West (a story that has been done to death, but this looked very different from others like Dragon Ball or Shinzo), I managed to watch an episode in European Spanish but I didn't caught my attention. Was the series popular outside of Japan? Did it aired on Toonami in the U.S. or something? I have to agree that the OP and ED for the original anime are awesome though.
