I'm liking what I saw. They teased us with the fan service, which is the most important thing I wanted to see. Yoko looks so good. Nei's outfit looks good. Sheila looking good too. Schneider came first, but in this video he's reminding me of Inuyasha. Just a bit.

As for the music, I can see why they chose Takanashi this time.

Holy crap! This just gets better and better.

This trailer looks pretty good and captures exactly what one would expect from a "Heavy Metal Dark Fantasy." That being said, I can't help but feel someone at Netflix really likes the 90s stereotype of what people thought anime was and has gotten shows that actively lean into those stereotypes. Which is fine, they get plenty of other genres as well, but it's something I can't help but notice.

It clearly works, Record of Ragnarok for all its issues was in the Netflix Top 10 during its premiere here.

NGL, that teaser looks pretty goddamn good, and the music choice is on point...

...but then, I remember the Record Of Ragnarok teaser looking as good as this and how it turned out to be trash. The fact that this anime is gonna be on Netflix, meaning that is very likely gonna be locked out in Netflix Jail, doesn't get my hopes up either.

At the very least for this particular case, Bastard is largely 'those things' to the point that it wouldn't be Bastard without it so I would hope any adaptation of it would lean into that as hard as possible

What gives you the impression that it's going to be in Netflix Jail? Doesn't the trailer itself say it's debuting globally this year like JoJo and Record of Ragnarok did in their respective trailers?

Yasuharu Takanashi as composer for a show with "Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy" in the title is perfect. Really looking forward to this!

Yeah, everything about that trailer more or less pleased me. Also, considering the character/cast reveals & the figures that have already been teased, this 24-episode series will likely just be for the first story arc, The Dark Rebel Armies. That makes sense, since that arc's just shy of 8 whole volumes, so 24 episodes is doable to cover all of it accurately.

The original OVA from the early 90s only covered up into Volume 5, though it skipped over some stuff to get there in just six episodes, so there'll be plenty of new content for those who only ever watched that.

Undoubtedly. I’d be disappointed if they did censor it given the original material. It’s just something I’ve noticed with Netflix’s acquisitions. It makes sense if you think about it, since they are trying to appeal to a general audience and it’s clear from their past successes that shows like this strike a chord with their viewership.

The first arc is about 7¾ volumes long. That is enough for 24 eps if paced a bit on the slower side but that can´t work due to the cliffhanger. The manga basically reaches its endpoint ⅔ though volume 12 so even that could work with 24 eps as the manga´s plot is rather thin at that point. LIDEN can do this right and just stop there and accept that evil is defeated or burn down the barn and continue with the one-upmanship during the Crimes & Punishment arc in Vol 13 to 18 that gives the manga a new artstyle, a new plot (all the plot ever actually!), an unrecognizable cast and world, an out of nowhere time-jump and the edge it´s known for now. Racing to the time jump in 24 eps also can´t work as it creates no endpoint the anime would end up with lightspeed pacing. LIDEN´s specialty.
The manga´s first half isn´t that spicy btw. Edgelords will be left disappointed and it´s even readable. The 2nd half though, dear lord. Anyway. The production values look ok? Not the LIDEN I know...

I keep expecting to hear news of a Netflix Guyver reboot any day now.

I mean, Netflix is the same streaming platform that has Devilman Crybaby, which has uncensored blood and sexual content up the wazoo.

Perhaps, but it's also a very famous manga that continues to be referenced in modern anime. Netflix does lean into things that are popular existing properties rather than trying to invent new IP, and does want things with a global appeal.

I can't help but feel that some modern fans outside Japan have no understanding of what is very famous and popular in Japan. There are things that have been more popular outside Japan than in it (e.g. Trigun, Big O), but Bastard!! isn't one of them.

After all, it's the US release that got cancelled halfway through. That's not the sign of something far more popular in the US than Japan.

It's like if you see some new Fist of the North Star spinoff; yes, it would be similar to what people in the 90s thought of anime, but it's done because Hokuto no Ken is an incredibly popular and well known franchise in Japan to this day. Believe it or not, nostalgia for 80s and 90s anime and manga can be a big draw in Japan as out of it.

I like it but I think "Campy Fantasy" is a better description.
