I’m wondering how long it will be before they announce yet another director. It’s been a repeating pattern for the past 15 years: they announce a new director and writer followed by a year or two of silence before announcing another new director, etc..

I thought Hawkeye was solidly directed but it feels weird to pivot from that to a Mecha show.

Not this again. It’s never gonna happen, and if it does, it’s not going to be very good.

This happening after the Harmony Gold/Big West licensing agreement gives it a 10% chance of being made, and just being a straight Macross movie. Which is 10% more than it had before.

That’s because there was enough legal back and forth that the announcements were just done in the hopes that the legal stuff would be resolved. Presumably Sony got furious at both sides and came to bargain because they do see this as a major franchise if the movie gets made and does well. Of course, they see Macross as that franchise, not Southern Cross and Mosepada, so what they do if the film gets made is anyone’s guess.

Cowboy Bebop was in development for a number of years, and eventually got made, same thing could happen with this.

That said, something like this is going to be very costly to make. Do they really think there is a big enough audience out there for this?

Obviously yes. They have to, considering all the work put in to bring all the parties together. Nothing does that better than the scent of money. Whether they will pull it off, or if the adaptation turns into Macross 'lite' is another thing. I hope they come close to a Battle Angel Alita type of adaptaton.

And another director to add to the collection. Let´s see who will shoot it in the end and when. I suspect that this will only move forward for real if Gundam by Netflix succeeds and that one has decent people behind it right now. We´ll see.
