Things fared better when the system launched in North America and Europe, with the at-the-time-impressive port of Altered Beast proving to be a head-turner. Europe proved to be the strongest market, while Sega still struggled in North America for a few years.
The Master System had also done very well in Europe, so it had a well established user base by the time the Mega-Drive launched.

This was such a great read! I honestly had no idea how different the console battle was in Japan versus the US so that was really interesting. I was a die-hard Sega loyal since the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis, and as you might expect, I used to own various consoles, including the Genesis, Game Gear, Saturn, and Dreamcast. I never had a Sega CD or 32X, though. I actually really loved the Saturn, starting with Virtua Fighter 2 and continuing through many games, including the Panzer Dragoon series, particularly the epic Panzer Dragoon Saga. I also was a huge fan of the Dreamcast, and I still remember going to the KB Toy's at the local mall to purchase the console at its launch around my birthday in 1999, along with Sonic Adventure, of course. I feel like I can relate to Uncle at least partially because I was really bummed when I found out that Sega would be exiting the console market, but I was able to "recover" knowing that Sega would still be making games. And "Isekai Ojisan" is awesome in so many ways (the anime, at least)!!

Informative article, thanks! I now understand the part about "sacrificing his love countless times", funny thing is that looking at youtubes of Alien Soldier it seems Kaede barely had any role - she was introduced and died in the introduction text, and then later player has to fight her evil boss forms. I guess Uncle is true RolePlayer - if manual says player loved her then Uncle loved her with all his might.

Thanks very much for the game clips, it gives great perspective. And people liked these huh...? I also got a kick out of the M68000 reference as I used to program those in machine language ala 1982 and they were fossils in 1995...
