R.I.P. And yes, he liked those parodies of his work in A-Ko and Excel Saga.

May he enjoy one last never-ending journey to the stars.

Eight five years is long enough that I don't think that sadness is quite the appropriate sentiment. That's a lot for mortal men and he made quite a lot of them.

If nothing else, Galaxy Express 999 is a favorite of mine and has been since I stumbled upon the first film on The Sci-Fi Channel's Saturday Anime as a child. I still love it and feel an acute gratitude that he created something that I have found so rewarding. His work had uncommon distinction, vivaciousness and grandeur.

Tragic news, but 85 years, well over half of those providing us with so many wonderful characters, stories, and adventures, a good long life.

They've been a big part of my life for four decades now, and I'm forever thankful to him.

May he sail the sea of stars forever.

I've been fighting off being sick for the better part of a week, so this hit extra hard to my addled faculties. I know it's not a total surprise, but I've still really enjoyed his works and hoped we'd get to have him with us a bit longer. The American anime fandom might not have come to pass at all without the Yamato.

Rest in peace and thanks for everything. I hope you find Iscandar on the way to your own Arcadia.

As soon as I'm coherent enough to actually understand things again, I'll definitely be doing a deep dive into the Leijiverse again. I even have my train ticket, courtesy of Discotek.

He is one of the reasons why anime was allowed to mature from a kid's medium to something broader outside of his manga being very influential. Not necessarily a creator whose works can stand side by side with the greats of today but someone had to make the push. For sure a Mount Rushmore type of mangaka, writer and director. Also well known for showing up to cons and stuff. RIP

Rest in Peace to a total legend. I think one of the dubbed 80's Galaxy Express movies was maybe my first anime experience when I was like 3.

Yes, he ranked alongside Shotaro Ishinomori, & Go Nagai for making anime mature beyond children demographic. His passing will great be felt around the world (particularly France where his work is well-loved amongst French speakers). Hearing about his death just now really sadden me because I watched Captain Harlock a decade ago on Hulu (when Hulu used to be free ad-supported before they went premium), I've watched The Galaxy Railways back in 2010 on Funimation's website. I have high respect for Matsumoto's work because of how creative he was back in his era.

He'll be missed. RIP Leiji Matsumoto 1938-2023
