NEWS: Top-Selling Manga in Japan by Volume: 2023 — One Piece Tops Chart for 13th Time

Two thoughts:


  1. The fact that Tokyo Revengers wasn't even popular enough here for the Your Anime Rankings series is kinda striking in light of the final volume outselling everything that isn't One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, or Spy x Family in Japan.
  2. Kaiju No. 8's had a hell of a decline. In 2021, volume 1 sold 1,079,348 copes, just behind the top-selling volumes of Spy x Family and Tokyo Revengers. 2022, it dropped below My Hero Academia, with volume 5 selling 834,159 copies. And now 505,921? I think the technical term is "tanking". The anime's four months away, and a lot's been invested in it, but I have to wonder how much of the originally anticipated audience will still be interested.

Does anyone have any idea what the ratio for digital/streaming sales might be? As this chart only covers physical copies?

4 volumes of JJK sold: 6.069.245 = 1.517.311 per volume sales
3 volumes of OP sold: 4.903.561 = 1.634.520 per volume sales
90s Jump won the battle over 2010s Jump.

I don't see many people in the west talk about Kingdom much either. And Blue Lock seems to be limited to territories where Soccer is more popular (i.e. not America). Just some of those series that never hit their stride in America I guess. I don't know if the official anime release of Tokyo Revengers is still covered in lightbars and other censorship, but I imagine that turned some people off from getting into the anime initially as well.

I'm glad Do Not Say Mystery made it but disappointed it's the only josei title on the list and no shojo. Everything else is shonen and seinen.

Tokyo Revengers ended in late 2022. That not only Vol 31 but also Vol 30 charted in 2023 (most volume sales happen in the first 2 weeks) proved that the IP walked through its finishing line with full honors. The Mickey Mouse ended got clowned on in America and it was even more of a COVID phenomenon than in Japan, where the manga retained lasting popularity.

9/10 manga in the top 10 are from Shueisha and 1 from Kodansha. 11-20 have 7 from Shueisha manga and 3 from Kodansha. 21-30 have 5 from Shueisha, 4 from Shueisha and 1 lone entry from Shogakukan (the one female demo entry that is pushed by its popular LA series) but Shogakukan is part of a business group with Shueisha. That is the real takeaway. 73.3% of the top 30 is owned by one company and 27.7% by another. THIS is what a monopoly looks like boys and girls.
