50 million units isn't bad for a console that first appeared on store shelves in 2023.

So am i to assume that the PS5 has not sold as much as it should compared to previous consoles that have been out for this long in terms of generational life span?

At the very least, the cost per console would have been way less if people weren't forced to buy from scalpers or ridiculous bundles with a bunch of crap that no one wanted in order to get the console prior to this year.

I was in the latter camp, and now I own Spider-Man and Ghosts of Tsushima twice because of that (bought them for PS4 out of genuine interest, then was forced to purchase them again (at full price)), a second controller that I don't need, plus a controller charger that just takes up space to get the PS5 at a retailer that was taking advantage of no one selling the console normally. The cost of that would have been better spent on actually new games.

They got me for Demon's Souls. I definitely would have waited if it weren't for that.
I now have a burning hatred for Gamestop and will never go to one again.

Even retailers that didn't do ridiculous bundles had direct-to-scalper sales with no brick and mortar releases, plus timed online releases that only people using bots could get, instead of back-orders like a normal in-demand but mass-produced product, which made things worse for regular consumers. Most retail stores didn't even have an area for the PS5 to be sold in-store, so they definitely weren't selling to normal people, at all.

I dunno if this is Sony's fault, collusion from every major retailer, or just coincidence, but I am not happy about this generation.

The article itself says that the PS5 is Sony’s fastest selling console, so no?

It’s most definitely not Sony’s fault.

Don’t get the snark here. I know the system was infamously difficult to find in stores between the semiconductor shortages and COVID restrictions but….

Yes, it is at least partially Sony's fault. They could have managed expectations better. They could have worked with retailers to combat scalpers.

And I was in their raffle. When my name came up, I took a half day off work to make sure I had a decent chance. And their website was down the entire time slot. In the end, they did nothing to compensate all of us. Heck, they didn't even respond to our emails about it.

There might have been elements beyond Sony's control, but there were definitely things they could have done, but didn't.

See above. It wasn't just COVID or shortages. It was all the rest.

What the article doesn't state is that the PS5 reached 50 million 1 week behind the PS4. PS4 was week ending Dec 6. PS5 is week ending Dec 9. So, really just a few days behind.

If Gran Turismo 7 wasn't afflicted by the Always-Online-DRM plague (where I simply refuse to buy a game if I can't play single-player career mode offline), I probably would've bought a Playstation 5 by now.

I do hope to get a next generation console around my birthday next October but it'll be more to play backwards compatible games and 4K Blu-Rays than it will be because there are a large number of new games that I want to play.
