Oh man, so much to unpack...

It's shocking that it took this long for the Kenichi sequels to be licensed...but good on Discotek for getting back the old dub cast.

Speaking of, that gives me hope that when Discotek eventually gets to the undubbed Nanoha shows, they can get back the old cast.

The Reborn! news is frustrating...I really thought they were dubbing the whole show for a moment. Still, it is better than nothing, and maybe if it sells well...

Berserk is obviously huge news. Discotek is frankly my favorite anime distributor at this point.

They stated in the stream multiple times that they will never dub more Reborn! beyond what will be on this fan disc, no matter how well it sells. During the Q&A Justin even said that crowdfunding such an endeavor would cost literal millions of dollars, exponentially more than any anime Kickstarter has ever raised.

The only thing that "if it sells well" applies to is the idea of doing special fan discs for other cult favorite anime, especially if it has an OVA that couldn't be included previously, like what Reborn! had.

Whelp, they got the holy grail, and I am honestly struggling to think of any other anime license that could ever bring them so much hype again in the future.

But yes, where do I deposit my wallet? For years, all we could legally get was either a UK bluray (different region, though), or the more modern takes on Berserk, so they will absolutely be getting my money as soon as humanly possible

Holy shit! Did they mention there were any licensing issues with Berserk or anything? Just really curious why it’s been licensed in the UK for years, yet no one in the US was picking it up. Glad it’s coming in March, won’t have to wait much longer! Cool

Cool. A chance to finally buy Berserk. That's nice. I'll probably get Nanoha A's and Futakoi Alternative as well

Wow, what a blockbuster pickup. I imported the UK BD release years ago but I'm absolutely double-dipping for this. I love that the outtakes are a major selling point too. They know what we want. Very Happy

It'd be nice if they can one day license rescue some of the stuff Aniplex is cockblocking. Blood+ would be a nice classic to have again.

When Discotek makes an announcement it is usually always something truly great.

it is amazing that Keinchi ova's will finally have an official release in the west finally and with the return of most of the original cast feels such a mega bonus Smile.

I look forward to what else they might get in the future.

They said in the previous stream back in October that they won't be dubbing shows longer than one cour because of budget. The Kenichi OVAs are 11 episodes so that's fine but for Nanoha, there's StrikerS (26), ViVid (12) & ViVid Strike (12 and a few OVAs). Lovely Complex was an exception only because the people who worked on it wanted to do it so badly but it's not the norm.

It sucks because I always liked the Nanoha dub but I knew this would be an issue when the Reflection film was revealed to be subtitled-only so it is what it is.

The MVM / Madman release also had issues due to a gamma bug where the video looked brighter than the Japanese discs so here's hoping Discotek's release looks better than that.

Amazing to see the Kenichi OVAs finally get picked up. Never thought that would happen at this point.

I'm sure there are plenty of other OVAs from series that never got picked up that it would be nice to have Discotek pick up (feel free to list any), but off the top of my head I'd love to see them pick up the Strike the Blood OVAs. I know Crunchy has the first set, but it's been quiet since then (plus it's not on BD yet).

I'll probably pick up those Berserk BDs too at some point to upgrade my DVDs

Whoa, so Discotek got Albegas (and how nice of them to remind people that this anime was originally going to be the 3rd Voltron aka Gladiator Voltron), and it's ironic because I made that prediction back in 2020 after they license Daltanias (the anime that originally was going to be the Lion Voltron before Go-Lion became the Lion Voltron we came to love and know).

I admittedly wouldn't pick up Reborn myself so I understand why they wouldn't dub more of it in the first place, but Veronica Taylor as Reborn is hilarious casting and makes me wish more would be dubbed.

I wish TMS would bother dubbing these Lupin III features again. Not that I would be super excited for these two (they're radioactively bad TV specials), but it would be nice, going forward.

Just about the only thing that has me interested (anime-wise) is Berserk, which I somehow never got around to seeing before, despite being an anime fan for over three decades.

Sex and Fury sounds like it might be worth a watch, too.

The discussion of how they don't particularly expect to be doing more longer kids' shows definitely made a lot of the magical girl fans in the chat pretty worried about the chances of us getting... well, basically any title, really. Toei's still really protective of Precure, which is why I doubt the dub of 2004 will be seeing the light of day any time soon, and they confirmed explicitly that they've asked about the live-action PGSM and were told it's not up for licensing by anyone at the moment (and given Takeuchi's likewise protective and how far off the rails THAT show goes... I'm not getting my hopes too high,) but that alone didn't seem likely to be a problem for shows like Tokyo Mew Mew, Mermaid Melody, or Ojamajo Doremi. The problem is, they're all long, and a lot of the classic stuff WAS aimed at kids. I feel like the two that aired on 4Kids, at least, have the potential to do better than average - there's a LOT of nostalgia for Tokyo Mew Mew, after all, and it sounds like Sonic X and Digimon have both been selling well, though they didn't mention Shaman King - but the dubs only covered the first half of Mew Mew and about half the first season of Doremi, where the shonen series they've released all had complete series dubs to my knowledge.

It's really disheartening that we got a reboot of Tokyo Mew Mew but the classic series isn't legally available in ANY form in English. And it feels like a self-reinforcing feedback loop, at a certain point, that no one will take a chance on these shows because they "don't sell" when part of the issue may well be a lack of visibility, which was what the big names of Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura notably HAD.
