Technically is not that the adaptation of that season was rushed, the part that they adapted was correct. The problem is that between the S1 arc and the Van arc there was an arc that was skipped. Van arc is a lot better and more interesting than the skipped arc, so in terms of adaptation it make sense what they did it.
Skipping that arc only created two minor problems, the first one is the old woman that was the previous mayor or something like that (I don't remember her name), she appeared out of nowhere in that season and practically did nothing. That character was important in the skipped arc but her existence is pretty pointless in that season. The second problem is the reason Van and his party went to Zoltan, the flying ship. Nobody apart from Ruti, Red, etc, knew that the flying ship was in Zoltan, Ruti and Tisse used it to travel to Zoltan in S1 and hid it, everyone who knew is dead (Ares) or is part of Red group and they are hiding that Ruti is in Zoltan, they can't explain how the ship ended in Zoltan without revealing Ruti. It makes no sense that a band of assassins and later Van and his party knew that the flying ship was there. In the LN they were not in Zoltan for the flying ship, but the real reason is a spoiler from the skipped arc: spoiler[In the skipped arc a giant ship (not a flying one) that was from a previous demon lord, ended in Zoltan. All of that was public knowledge so it made sense that the clergy knew of the existence of the ship and Van wanted it.] But at the end only who read the novels could catch those minor problems so at the end of the day the change worked pretty well. |

This season was good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the last one. I wasn't really interested in Van and his arc of dealing with the hero blessing (again) and would have liked to have had more focus on Red & Rit and their relationship.

Personally, I felt that they should have adapted the main plot of Volume 10 where spoiler[Van and Red's party go back to the ruins where they fought Shisandan and Ares to learn the truth about the Hero blessing] as it perfectly closes out Van's character arc.

Overall, S2 covered LNs Vol 5, 8-9, and 10's ending. (One episode 4 was anime original, but its plot written by the LN author.)
IMO, the spoiler[brief unspoken exchange between Red and Van in the final scene] leaves enough wiggle room for a theoretical S3 to cover Vol 10 content. And then, hopefully backtrack to cover the skipped Vols 6-7. |

I thougt this was a disappointing second season; it felt boring and uninspired. I bought the disc release for season 1, but I am not sure I will do the same for season 2.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the second season.
I found the first to be cute but mildly boring and was close to dropping the second one after the first episode. But I'm happy I stuck with it, Van is a great antagonist and brings the whole discussion around blessings better into focus, in the first season I felt it only amounted to window dressing. I also enjoyed the episode focusing on Ruti and Tisse, with Ruti trying to make space for Tisse to confide in her but Tisse just being bewildered about what's going on. As the first season, the series looked pretty bland, only punctuated by a few impressive and more characterful fight sequences. Better direction and design could really have elevated the calmer sequences, which often turned out to be a bit of a slog. |

Overall, I liked this season and it's continued exploration of choice, agency and moral duty in a world where everyone has preordained roles. Red and Rit continue to be adorable. The first half of the seasons obsession with crowbarring some naked Ruti into every single episode was a bit weird and frequently felt incongruous, as of course was the very weird opening credits sequences' obsession with her feet and shorts. Ruti and Tisse's relationship is great though, and Tisse might even be my second favourite character. Behind Mr Crawly Wawly of course. Van, his insane natural calamity girlfriend and the corrupt bishop make for fairly interesting opposition, each having fairly different motivations but a vested interest in Van being "The Hero". Red, once again demonstrates just how stupidly off target Ares was in declaring him useless, by having the skill to hold his own in a fight against the hero. But his real power is his ability to bring out the best in those around him, and promote growth even in his enemies.
Overall, a solid "above average" without being a stand out great I guess |
