I have no idea how film can work here and the manga´s plot is hardly its selling point. People who aren´t into manga and anime also have no context to what the story is commenting on and those new eyes are the core demographic. Making a live-action show would solve all sorts of problems and reduce the budget load making it all less risky but this is Sony and they never think.
Dan Harmon is a top talent. Will Sony let him do this thing? Sony hired, fired and rehired with Community so who knows?

They are so the wrong people for this. Harmon's brand of nihilistic cynicism doesn't gel with OPM's more subtle brand of cynicism mixed with genuine optimism, and Campbell wrote the absolute worst episode of the 2019 Twilight Zone revival.

Harmon can do genuine optimism if you look at some of the better episodes of Community, so I think he might be able to do a decent OPM. I don't know anything about Campbell though so if anything, based on what you said I think if it's bad it'll be more from his side.

You know... setting aside the ever-present factor that live-action remakes of cartoons (and especially anime) are almost always bad. Then again we live in a post-One Piece world now so maybe there's still some hope there.

I don't know I still don't get why these live action animes need to exist if you ask me they are
pointless.

Not sure which episode you are referring to, since 1 of them was co-written with Glen Morgan, and the other two ("Among the Untrodden" and "Not All Men") were very good.

I'll give Campbell the benefit of the doubt, simply because she knows her stuff when it comes to anime. I do not know too many people -- let alone Hollywood writers -- who re-wire the lights in their videogame room to flash the colors of the OG Gundam and play the 1979 theme song when they say "It's Gundam Time!".

This is the first sign that gave me a smidge of optimism regarding the American One Punch Man.

Having Justin Lin direct some awesome action with the writers from Rick and Morty at least tells me that they know what the material needs. I'm not expecting it to be a 1:1 adaptation. Characters and overall story could stay the same, but the satire and references would absolutely be changed to fit Hollywood's history of superhero movies. Which could be interesting as we've had a dense last decade to mine.

I personally don't think Rick and Morty when I think One Punch Man. Seems like a disaster in the making. Also there's a less than 0% chance they're doing Tatsumaki, Blackluster/Darkshine, or Puri Puri Prisoner any kind of remote sense of justice Laughing

I never expected to see Dan Harmon and One Punch Man associated together though I'm kind of curious how his style of humor will mesh with OPM.

Wasn't "Not All Men" the one where they literally turn to the camera and say "all men are inherantly violent rapists" and made Lifetime Original Movies seem like nuanced storytelling by comparison? Probably not the best people to be in charge of One Punch Man given how much some people like to complain about Tatsumaki on social media already. But I guess that applies to pretty much every manga that gets adapted in the west due to culture differences.

Money.
The answer is money.

But more seriously the answer is because there is a large audience of people who will not watch "cartoons" because they are for kids. But they will watch live action.

Hell look at the marvel movies and how many more fans of marvel stuff there are now than before when they were just comic books.

Yeah, it's a sad but unfortunate fact that to a large portion of Americans (or hell, the world) for whom the word animation is pretty much equivalent to "stuff for children" and adults will not see it if not forced to by a kid. Making it live action is pretty much a guarantee of a bigger crowd.

Anyone who thinks Harmon is just an edgelord clearly only knows him for Rick and Morty, a show he isn’t even the primary voice of. Community IS that balance between cynicism and optimism, plus having more gentle homage to its references.
