I liked the manga, but can they really make it work within a (hopefully) two hour running time or less?

No idea, but it'll sure be interesting to see what they can do with his kind of material. Generally speaking I've liked what I've seen in terms of the animated adaptations of Tezuka's works, but then again I'm not a purist nor an expert on the subject given my limited familiarity with any of the original manga. Buddha's reputation precedes it though, so at the very least there's potential here. Hopefully the movie turns out alright.

I want to see this, as both a Buddhist and a fan of Tezuka.

That's exactly what I was wondering when I first heard the news. It would have been better as a TV or OVA series. It's the same issue movies based off of books or manga face in general though and most end up disappointing in this regard. Maybe they'll just adapt part of the story? Whatever the case, I hope it does work out

I'm so down. I'm sure a lot will be changed, but that's the case with all manga based anime.

A whole TV series would have been better, but so far I liked most, if not all, the movie adaptations of Tezuka's manga. ^^

I adore all of Tezuka's works ("Buddha", "MW", "Swallow the Earth", "Apollo's Song"... the list goes on), and the prospect of seeing one of my personal favorites on the big screen, with lavish, big-budget animation, is one that excites me to no end. While I'm not sure how they will handle the fact that this is a very long series that spans several decades, I'm somewhat confident it will be done in a way that honors the source material and doesn't dumb it down. They're not going to bowdlerize the work of the God of Manga, after all.
