Okay, seriously - Zettai Karen Children WITHOUT the Children? Who's brilliant idea was this?

The person who decided that bringing Aya Hirano back on board would do more damage than good, most likely. I was kinda worried from the moment the new anime was announced that there might be something off about it due to ever since her scandal, she hasn't had any significant roles reprised (that weren't already announced pre-scandal like Qwaser 2 or on-going like Fairy Tail), and it seems like ZKC is doing the same thing.

I wish they woulda just replaced her like they did with Shinobu in Nise. I doubt people would complain much.

If she's really poison to a product line (which strikes me as silly, but that seems to be the reality on the ground in Japanese anime fandom), then it seems that you are correct that replacing her is the correct course of action, rather than creating a product for which there isn't a market.

"Sayaka Ohara is replacing Saeko Chiba as Momiji Kanō"
Well...we know what I'll be watching.

Sayaka Ohara replaces Saeko Chiba... Disappointing. Really disappointing. I loved Chiba's work as Momiji, and as much as I like Ohara, she does more calm, gentle types, like Irisviel or Kaede, or even something like Lyla Hamilton, but this isn't what she's meant for. CHIBA COME BACK!

Early confirmation of all the bishies, practically no female characters announced. I see what they're doing here, but it's still kinda bizarre. One of the strengths of ZKC in my mind is that it has one of the most balanced casts of any shonen manga, with a lot of cool/strong/funny characters of both genders.

I wouldn't say it has no market. I've been under the impression for a good while now that ZKC has an unusually large number of female fans, just judging from how much fanservice and marketing (and fanart) they get directed at them.

Honestly, I still expect the Children will show up in this at some point, even if they aren't the driving force of the plot. It would take some sort of huge plot contrivance to separate Minamoto from the Children for an entire series.

Shiina talks a bit about the spin-off in his blog, but I always find his Japanese especially hard to follow.

Not what I was expecting, but a Raoh Gaiden for Kyouske? I'm so in for this.

Huh, first I heard of that. Wouldn't be surprised though, three fairly competent female main leads, a variety of bishonen support / antagonists and such?
