I'm surprised NANA didn't make the list. Yazawa is not death, but the chances of her resuming that series are very slim given how it's been years since it was last published because the mangaka hasn't had enough strength to do it.

Has anyone actually figured out what happened to her? I realize the Japanese media tends not to delve into details when reporting on celebrity health problems, but it seems odd that neither Yazawa nor her publisher ever gave even the slightest explanation of what's going on. As far as I know, she's been out of the hospital for years now. Did she hurt her hand or something? Or did she just crack under the pressure of being famous? |

To add on a few more, I know the original Trinity Blood light novels are technically unfinished since the author passed away, although I think the manga-ka was a close friend so there might be closure there someday. I know that Psyren was cut short but that was due to falling ratings, not the manga-ka's health (and he was able to get enough time to wrap up the series, it's pretty obvious in the later parts of it that it's super rushed however).

For a list of manga cut short due to the health of the author, there is a surprising number of light novels in the list... Sure, there are manga adaptations of them, but it is generally the original medium that one would say was cut short. After all, the manga could be cut short because it wasn't successful or it wasn't planned to go beyond book 1 of the novels or something, without the author's death. (See Sayonara Piano Sonata for a prime example. The manga is only volume 1 of the light novel series.) Just sayin'...

Psyren ran in Shounen Jump, so it having a rushed ending wasn't terribly surprising. It's probably the most cutthroat mag of them all in terms of canceling series. Psyren struggled with ratings throughout its run and it was lucky to last a long as it did (and this is coming from someone who's a fan of the series). |

Kaoru Tada wasn't killed in a car accident, she hit her head on a table and suffered cerebral hemorrhage. Pretty tragic nonetheless.

This was actually kind of a depressing installment of "The List."
While I heard about the majority of the entries in this week's list, there were a couple I didn't know about until reading this. R.I.P. to all of these mangaka and light novel authors. |

Hear, Hear! That was the first one that popped to mind when I saw the link for this column. I really liked the first few omnibus volumes put out, and was saddened to hear the news of its manga-ka passing away. I'm disappointed to not see that mentioned while works that were primarily light-novels to begin with (Kaze no Stigma & Zero no Tsukaima) get considered. Then again, I guess a lot more people are familiar with those than With The Light... |
