This could either be the start of a great new chapter or a terrible one. Crunchyroll has a great thing going now thanks to more active support from the original Japanese licensors, I'd hate to see an American company with little understanding of what makes Crunchyroll so great meddle with a good roll.

Based upon the Wikipedia article on Chernin, he doesn't sound like the kind of guy who'll come in and ruin the Crunchyroll. I think this explains exactly why he's interested in buying them:

Crunchyroll with more capital and more influence domestically could be a really big deal. And Peter Chernin seems like somebody who's more than just some stodgy old suit tossing around money on a whim, he even tried to buy Hulu earlier this year for about $500 million [although apparently it didn't happen, or at least hasn't happened yet].

I just have this feeling if this guy buys Crunchyroll he will make it more about American Comics and shows then anime/manga. I might be wrong then again having a way to read DC and Marvel on this sight or watching shows like Batman on this site might increase revenue make it a place for anime and cartoon fans.

It can be a good thing if Crunchyroll is still allowed a lot of control or a huge disaster. Crunchyroll has a good thing going with a lot of licenses that can broadcast for free.

That's a lot of money to let pass by. Investors and startups would want to cash out.

American comics already have Comixology, and it's good (manga needed something like that). Meanwhile, DC/Warner Bros and Marvel/Disney would rather keep their prime shows in-house.

Nevertheless, it doesn't matter if it's true or not. I really hope that CR doesn't sell out. More broadly, I hope that history doesn't repeat itself. Also, it doesn't matter what kind of experience this other company has. None of it necessarily means that they know anything about what makes CR what it is (or rather, what it NOW is), or about anime for that matter. For all we know, CR could end up going through the website equivalent of "network decay", and I really hope this doesn't happen (among other things). Again, I hope that CR will stay independent.

Crunchyroll with the capital and clout to actually pull a Netflix and start producing original content would be pretty incredible, I think, and that's one thing that a deal like this could ultimately lead to.

I'm sure Chernin knows as much about anime as the Rockefeller family, whose Venrock capital investment firm is CR's current biggest investor and whose stake Chernin's trying to buy.

Wait, if TV Tokyo gets a controlling interest in Crunchyroll, will that put CR in danger of being unable to acquire non-TV Tokyo shows? (I might've read the whole article wrong, but it was the first concern that popped in my mind)

I don't think it said anywhere that TV Tokyo would have a controlling stake. If that's the case, it's not stated in the article.
