I enjoyed watching the enka variety shows when I lived in Japan. I learned a couple of songs to do at karaoke and, yes, people were not impressed. I was suddenly extremely uncool.
On a different karaoke trip I did Fly Me To The Moon and they were really impressed with how good my English was.

Oh well, I wouldn't call that performance "Enka". More like an Enka singer performing Evangelion theme, not an Evangelion theme "Enka style"...
