A military based series? I kinda like that premise tbh. Looking forward to it.

Aircraft carrier? Surely they mean "helicopter destroyer," right? Wink

As a military buff sounds interesting but unless things drastically changed in the world of the story of this new series Japan has long been since WWII banned from possessing Aircraft Carriers.

So yeah kind of unrealistic if they are going for a modern day story based on how things are today.

Actually Japan has five carriers! They get around the restrictions on offensive weapons by calling them "helicopter destroyers", and they don't equip them with fighters. However, the newest and biggest of these carriers, the Izumo (which the Ibuki in the manga seems to be a stand in for) could probably be re-equiped with VTOL fighters like the F-35B.

It seems like Kawaguchi is trying to make a naitonalistic statement here, promoting a more active military role for Japan, and a move away from it's Constitutional pacifism. Not that that's a surprise, if you're familiar with his previous works.

I wonder if this is going to be another jingoistic excursion of how amazing Japan's military is. Ah, well, I like to daydream, too.

Well, manga can be based on anything, as long as writers is good and readership like it.

Japan's current government been trying change their Constitution to allow them to deploy to allied nations to defend them.

Wether or not they can get around the constitution's specifics stating they can't have anything bigger than a "destroyer" is another story.

Their Kongo Class and other bigger guided Missile Destroyers are on par if not slightly bigger than US Ticonderoga Class Cruisers, even thought they resemble various versions of Arleigh Burke class, their really cruiser sized ships with even cruiser names used from World War II.

Their landing ships are slowly evolving into carriers, along with their "Helicopter Destroyers". I don't know if the Izumo was equipped with special flight deck to handle the extreme heat of a F-35B, but its not been mentioned in public.

The image they manga teaser used was of a older 1950-1960 super carrier (if not updated World War II ship). I won't worry about being realistic setting for the manga.

I don't think anyone has said anything about worrying about it being realistic. I sure didn't. It doesn't need to be realistic to be jingoistic.
