{Edit: We don't look too kindly on what equates to nothing more than a "1st in" trollish post with no substance. So next time you might want to simply avoid the snarky "i'm first hur hur" post altogether. ~ Psycho 101}

I'd agree that everyone involved should have been over 18, which the organizer claims they were but the cafe owner disagrees so....*shrug*
But I'd really rather see cat and butler cafes...

Also from anecdote I infer that otaku culture is pretty niche in Japan. So I'm not sure how popular maid cafes are to the mainstream public even in Japan. So I don't think it's correct to assume that people in Japan would gladly accept this business opening up in their neighborhood just because it's Japan.
In the US I don't think there should be much of a problem if this type of business is opened up in metropolitan area or college town.

Maid cafes are overrated and often have overpriced and not so good food, not to mention I do not want a repeat of what happened in Michigan, my eyes got stage 5 cancer from looking at that. I've come to the conclusion that maid cafe just don't work in the West. Instead we should have cat or even dog cafes.

Quote: | But the concept is not one that fits naturally within the context of America, and to an outside eye, looks a lot more like a regressive place where girls act subservient and get skeeved on. |
Actually, that seems to describe Hooters, Twin Peaks, strip clubs etc. pretty well. But if maid cafes are employing kids under the age of 18 to be ogled by skeevy adults, I'm glad THAT doesn't fit naturally in the context of America. The fact that Japan is already featuring elementary school idol groups with physical contact meet-and-greets is disgusting and downright abominable.

Try not to make out that it's a male only thing in Akiba these days, I've been to maid cafe's a dozen or so times and I've seen a fair amount of women visiting those places. One group of women were holding a birthday party on one occasion I visited and another occasion only myself and one other guy were the only males in a cafe with a dozen or so customers for the hour I was there.
Still, it really is a Japan thing so I do agree that it isn't going to happen outside conventions.

Sadly, I don't see maid cafés catching on in the U.S. anytime soon. The interest in them is just not there; plus, the stigma of women being servants to male customers also doesn't help...

From what all I read, I dont blame the shop owner for what they did. If I was in her position, I'd do the same thing. Heck, even as an anime fan, I'd freak out if that happened. The girl hosting the event really should have been upfront in the first place that it was going to be a maid cafe.
And I really hope those girls who were going to be maids really were 18 and older, because allowing teenagers to do something like this is really just asking for trouble (if that makes sense).
For the U.S., I feel that maid cafes are the kind of thing that would only work in big cities (and even then, it depends on where that city is and where the cafe would be at in the ciry itself). And even at that, i dont think they would work out in the long run. Plus, I honestly feel like maid cafes are kinda "dated" now? Hard to explain I guess, but I feel if you are going to attempt to make one, that should have happened years ago back when maids were the "in-thing/popular character type" in anime.
I know a con I went to had a maid cafe and I didn't go, but I heard it wasnt worth it because all they sold was overpriced typical snack items (melon bread, pocky, ramune, ect.) and I think you had to pay to get in in the first place?
I agree that we should have cat/dog cafes here in the States. I feel that would be a huge hit.

No, I don't think Maid Cafes will ever be a "thing" in the US.
I remember a long week spent in Houston working with people in an office there as part of my then new job. My Hotel had only one restaurant within walking distance that was decent, a Hooters. Since I went there to actually eat, and was way too tired to even think about gawking at the waitresses, I mostly recall getting excellent service from cheerful ladies.

So, exactly hooters then? I'd rather eat at a maid café than a Hooters, at least the maids will more than likely be better dressed and make better conversation!

Well, I kinda took Japanese (just finished it recently) and when sensei was showing us a random Japanese website an ad for one of those that had teen girls happened to be on and sensei promptly told us to ignore that...so I suppose some Japanese even find it weird.

I just want to say that this was a great Answerman but I have one point of confusion:
Quote: | Now take that idea and put that in America, with its more prurient attitudes about sex and its constant (and justifiable) concerns about sexual predators. |
I feel like in this context, the usage of the word "prurient" is confusing to me. Maybe puritanical was meant instead? They have opposite meanings, but American attitudes towards sexuality can be kind of all over the map depending on who you're talking to so I'm really not sure!
