PS4 Console Sells 94.2 Million Units Worldwide

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Sony revealed in its financial results presentation for the third quarter of fiscal year 2018 (October 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018) that it shipped 8.1 million PlayStation 4 units during the quarter, bringing its worldwide total to 94.2 million units. The third-quarter shipments decreased by 0.9 million units compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced in January that it had cumulatively sold more than 91.6 million units globally as of December 31, 2018, and sold more than 5.6 million units globally during the 2018 holiday season.

Sony's previous sales forecast from October remains unchanged, and it predicts that it will ship 17.5 million units during fiscal year 2018. The company shipped 19 million units during fiscal year 2017, including 2.5 million units during the fourth quarter.

Game industry sales analysis site VGChartz previously estimated the PS4's lifetime sales as 88.05 million units in December. Sony previously revealed in October that it had shipped a worldwide total to 86.1 million units for the PlayStation 4 as of September 30.

The PlayStation 4 console first launched in the U.S. and Canada in November 2013 and in Japan in February 2014.
