Jay Chou is more fluent in Mandarin than Cantonese, so his voice was dubbed over in the latter language. Anne Suzuki's voice is also dubbed in Cantonese. The Japanese version uses a Japanese dub.
Original casting calls had Edison Chen as Takumi (before he was finally cast as Ryousuke) and director Andrew Lau as Bunta.
The film displayed numerous drastic changes to the original manga's storyline and characters. First, Takumi's friend Itsuki Takeuchi is reworked as Itsuki Tachibana, the son of gas station owner Yuuichi Tachibana, and leader of the Akina SpeedStars (effectively deleting original team leader Kouichirou Iketani from the script). For reasons unknown, Keisuke Takahashi is not included in the cast. Instead, parts of his character are incorporated into Takeshi Nakazato; as a result, the film version of Nakazato completely contradicts the manga and anime incarnation's anti-drifting philosophy. Bunta Fujiwara, who is portrayed as just a calm character in the manga and anime, is portrayed as an unpredictable drunkard in the film.
3 new Trueno's were made for this movie and one of them was wrecked by Jay Chou
