When this movie was released in March 1983, it contained a love scene. In Nov of the same year, the movie was re-released with the love scene cut out. This "newer" version is the one most often seen. The original ending can be seen on Youtube.
While this movie is setted after both "Be Forever Yamato" (setted in 2202) and "Star Blazers: The Bolar Wars" (setted in 2205), the story date in this movie reads "2203". Some fans believed this to be just errors while others see this film as ignoring the plot from "Star Blazers: The Bolar wars" from continuity.
Unlike previous "Space Battleship Yamato" (Star Blazers) anime, this one has Daisuke Shima voiced by two actors, but that's because Shuusei Nakamura suffered from stomach ulcer, which prevented him from completing all of the character's lines, so Isao Sasaki (who sang the film's end theme) stepped in to complete the lines that Nakamura wasn't able to do.
This movie features the return of Desslar's second flagship, which last appeared in "Space Battleship Yamato 2" (Star Blazers: The Comet Empire").
Before production began, this Anime was at first planned as a 26-episode T.V. series that would've been titled "Space Battleship Yamato IV: The Concluding Chapter".
