Trivia:

At the end of episode 13 Tsubasa's father wonders whether Step-siblings can get married when he sees how Kazuma and Tsubasa interact. Ironically in the Manga both Kazuma and Tsubasa do marry each other, though this does not occur in the anime. His comment is likely a reference to this.

The ending song, "Yume no Naka E" was used as an impromptu performance in the Sailor Moon Musicals Eien Densetsu (Kaiteiban).

Episode 25 has a reference to golgo 13 where Kano says, "Don't stand behind me."

The music that plays during the recap at the beginning of episode 26 is a rendition of the main theme from Space Battleship Yamato.

The Japanese video release to Kare Kano included an alternate version of the recaps shown in episodes 14 and 15 which adds statistics of each episode (animated frames, viewer count, ratings, etc...) and replaces the character narrations with music used to follow each episode discussed. Episode 18's video release also includes an extended scene involving a major event in Yukino and Arima's relationship which was only shown as a black screen for the TV airing.

The episode 6 insert song "S.O.S." was originally made famous by Pink Lady in 1976.

After directing just 15 episodes, Hideaki Anno left the production of this series after having a disagreement with manga creator Masami Tsuda and Gainax studio. As a result, the final 11 episodes were directed by Hiroki Satō.

In episode 1, there is a dialog about Hideki's "Boomerang". Hideki Saijo's hit single "Boomerang Street" was released on Mar 15, 1977. Moreover, spin-off version "Boomerang Straight" was released on Nov 21, 1992.

In episode 1, while Yukino struggles to stay awake during class, the song "II Air" as composed by Shiro Sagisu for "The End of Evangelion" plays (very softly) in the background.

In episode 8, there is a brief glimpse of some chemistry gear at the school - a large bottle of some chemical, some beakers, etc. A closer look at the bottle's label reveals that it is numbered NCC-1701. This is an in-joke, a reference to "Star Trek" -- that number being the registration number of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise.

In episode 10, during the fight between Miyazawa and Tsubasa, Miyazawa lands a jump in the same way as Eva 01 from "Neon Genesis Evangelion", another show also directed by Hideaki Anno.

In episode 11, when the girls are in town, they look at Totoro figures in a shop. Totoro is actually a character from the famous Ghibli movie My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro).

In episode 19, after the fight between Miyazawa and Fukada, their shadows and the sound of cidacas are very much similar to the aftermath of Eva 01 and Shamshel fight in episode 3 of "Neon Genesis Evangelion".

In episode 23 when Yukino and Arima are on the bike just before Yukino starts peddling she re-enacts the scene from Neon Genesis Evangelion where Ayanami Rei starts Eva 01. Hideaki Anno directed both Kare Kano and Neon Genesis Evangelion and is likely making a reference to this fact.
