Fullmetal Alchemist Quote Wins Marriage Proposal Contest

"Words to Propose Marriage" contest re-judged after source of entry was discovered

The Iwate Nippo newspaper reports on Tuesday that the winning entry in a regional "Words to Propose Marriage" contest was actually a quote from Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga. The Iwate Town Board of Education in northeastern Japan made the realization after the top winner was chosen, and so it decided to re-judge the contest results on Tuesday.

The contest was held by the Ishigami-no-oka Museum of Art; the museum takes pride in the picturesque hilly locale as a "Lover's Sanctuary" to pledge one's love. The board of education announced the initial contest results on Monday.

However, when the results in the "Words to Propose" category were read on the radio at noon that same day, listeners called to point out the source of the top winning entry. The organizers confirmed the source with the entry's submitter later on Monday and disqualified the entry. The top prize in the contest was a travel pass worth 100,000 yen (about US$1,200).

The initial winning entry was a quote from the last manga installment of Fullmetal Alchemist, which just ran in Japan in June. The quote is as follows:

Spoiler (highlight the following white text to read) ["Ore no jinsei hanbun yaru kara omae no jinsei hanbun kure." ("I'll give you half of my life so give me half of yours.")]
